Main Duties: 

The Career Medical Officer (CMO) plays a crucial role in providing independent and high-level medical care to patients in both the Emergency Department (ED) and inpatient wards. Your role will be a mix of clinical care, supervisory responsibilities, and educational involvement, making it integral to both patient outcomes and the development of junior medical staff within the ED. 

  1. Medical Care and Patient Management:
    • You will be responsible for assessing, investigating, and initially managing patients who present to the Emergency Department or are admitted to inpatient wards.
    • You will perform medical examinations, ordering investigations, diagnosing, and initiating treatments as necessary.
  2. Supervision and Collaboration:
    • You will work under the supervision of specialist staff, ensuring that patient care is aligned with best practices and clinical guidelines.
    • You will be responsible for providing support and guidance to junior medical staff, offering supervision in clinical settings to enhance learning and professional development.
  3. Educational Role:
    • You will actively support the completion of the Emergency Medicine Certificate (EMC) or Emergency Medicine Diploma (EMD), which are qualifications offered by the Australian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM).
  4. Independence in Care:
    • Despite supervision, you will operate with a significant degree of independence, making decisions on patient care based on your clinical judgment and expertise, especially in emergency situations where rapid decision-making is critical.

The Hospital:

The Local Health District’s services cover a vast area of over 100,000sq-kms in rural, regional and remote locations. With over 5,000 staff, the health district is the largest employer in the region, with a number of hospitals, mental health services and primary healthcare serving local communities. You will have the opportunity to work in both key emergency departments within the region.


The location:

The hospital is based in a regional city in a rural setting of New South Wales within a few hours drive of Sydney and Canberra. With relatively close proximity to major metropolitan areas, you will enjoy a thriving community in a city that is rapidly growing. This location is an affordable place to live with a range of good public and private schools encouraging many young families to make the decision to relocate here from some of the more expensive metropolitan areas in NSW. A strong community, Lush green parklands and beautiful sunsets make this an attractive area for young professionals and families.  

Requirements:

To apply for this position, you will need the following:

  • 12 months NHS experience and completion of PLAB examinations.

OR

  • UK or Irish graduates, and a minimum of two years’ clinical experience.

OR

  • General Registration with Medical Board of Australia.

In addition to:-

  • MBBS or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a public hospital emergency setting.
  • Advanced Life Support with ability to perform endotracheal intubation, insertion of central lines, arterial lines and intercostal catheters.
