Overview

This is an exciting opportunity within one of Scotland’s recognised Cancer Centre to join a supportive Oncology team, where everyone works together to deliver great patient care. The hospital is located in a cultural city that offers a unique blend of historic charm and modern living, while being surrounded by breathtaking scenery.

The Trust serves a diverse population, delivering specialist cancer surgery and treatments including chemotherapy and radiotherapy. You will be joining a friendly team of 4 Consultants which attracts 10 Programmed Activities and an on-call supplement.

This posts emphasis for clinical work will be on Urology and Gastrointestinal but other tumour sites would be considered.

The Trust/Service

The Hospital covers all specialties and is a training hospital for Nursing and Medical staff in association with three well known Universities. It is a Regional Cancer Centre.

The Cancer Centre provides cancer services to a population of 310,000 people with approximately 1100 new Oncology patients a year. As a member of one of Scotland’s Cancer Networks, it benefits from being in a well-established collaboration with two other Cancer Centres providing excellent peer support.

The Oncology department is small but dynamic, and facilities include 2 IGRT/IMRT capable multi-energy linear accelerators with VMAT and electrons, CT simulator, and RayStation planning software. The department also has a modern outpatient suite which includes a day case chemotherapy area and 18 in-patient beds shared with Clinical Haematology.

Remote working can also be facilitated when operationally suitable, however, the preference is someone who will be based onsite.

Responsibilities & Duties:

A formal job plan will be agreed between the successful candidate and the Clinical Director prior to starting. The post holder will be expected to undertake 10 Programmed Activities (PA’s) per week,  and while the focus will be within Urology and GI tumour sites,  there can be flexibility depending on interests.

There will be an expectation to provide subspecialty oncology services plus general acute oncology services (as part of a rota) within the hospital and the rest of the referral area. A Foundation Year 2 and ST3/4 doctor rotate through the ward as part of the general medical rotation as well as nurse practitioner support. You’ll also benefit from a night team who coordinate the care of inpatients overnight.

The purpose built out-patient clinical area (the Macmillan Suite) includes a pleasant suite of clinic rooms, preparation room, waiting area, quiet room, nurses office, seminar room and a chemotherapy day case area. SACT is prepared in the hospital in aseptic conditions, and administered by trained chemotherapy nurses lead by a Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialist. The pharmacy team are led by a Macmillan Specialist Oncology Pharmacist and there is a pharmacist presence in the oncology outpatient clinics. An electronic SACT prescribing system (Chemo care) is operational.

As a Consultant in Clinical Oncology, your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing expert and comprehensive services for Oncology together with the rest of the Consultant body
  • Collaborating with colleagues within the department to develop Oncology services
  • Leading and participating in multidisciplinary team meetings to optimize patient care plans.
  • Mentoring and providing guidance to junior medical staff and trainees
  • Undertake teaching, examination and accreditation duties
  • Engaging in research initiatives, clinical audits, and quality improvement projects to enhance patient outcomes.
  • Participating in the out of hours service and provide acute oncology service.
  • Follow patients throughout their clinical pathways

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Opportunities:

The Trust is committed to supporting the ongoing professional development of its medical staff. Consultants have access to a range of CPD opportunities, including:

  • Offering CESR support, with 2 Consultants recently submitting applications.  
  • Regular internal and external training sessions, workshops, and conferences.
  • Support for further academic pursuits, research endeavors, and postgraduate qualifications.
  • Mentorship programs and opportunities for leadership development.
  • Access to clinical supervision and peer review sessions to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • A dedicated Clinical Research Facility in which participants can take part in research programmes safely according to ethically approved study protocols.

The department is also willing to support Radiation Oncologists from overseas that have a lack of recent SACT experience. The friendly unit are able to offer a strong induction program, so you can be upskilled with your Chemotherapy experience.

Requirements:

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) is required
  • Prior or current Consultant or independent Clinical Oncology provision
  • Expertise within the site specialty where specified.
  • Previous experience in the management of one or more of the following sites: Urology, Upper and Lower GI, Acute Oncology.
  • Ability to take full responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and evidence-based practice.
