Consultant Dermatologist

2150
  • £105,504 to £139,882
  • UK, West Midlands
  • Permanent

We are working with a leading NHS Trust in the West Midlands to appoint a Consultant Dermatologist to a full-time (10 PA) substantive post. This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the largest and most well-established dermatology departments in the country, where you will work with an expert team delivering cutting-edge dermatological care. Whether your interest lies in medical dermatology, skin cancer, or specialist clinics, this role offers the platform to thrive in both clinical and academic spheres.

Role and Responsibilities

This is a 10 Programmed Activities (PA) post, though applications for less than full-time working are welcomed. The successful candidate will contribute to a variety of services, including:

  • General medical dermatology clinics
  • Two-week-wait (2WW) skin cancer clinics
  • Day case surgery and minor procedures
  • Teledermatology triage and virtual services
  • Cross-site working between two hospital locations to support a cohesive service

You’ll join a multidisciplinary team that includes consultants, specialist nurses, pharmacists, and allied health professionals, with shared responsibilities in delivering phototherapy, immunosuppressive and isotretinoin treatment, and specialist services in areas such as psychodermatology, paediatric dermatology, and cutaneous allergy.

The rota is built to support both service needs and work-life balance, with flexible clinic scheduling, shared on-call responsibilities (if applicable), and opportunities to participate in teaching, research, and clinical governance.

The Hospital

This is an exciting time to join a department with a bold three-year strategy to expand its services and specialist footprint. The dermatology team is part of a major NHS trust and delivers services across multiple hospital sites.

The bespoke dermatology centre at one of the sites opened in 2015 following a £4 million investment. It includes large, well-equipped consultant offices, dedicated clinical areas, and access to remote working via secure VPN systems. Additional clinics are run in modern outpatient facilities at another local hospital, with further expansion plans underway.

This department is the largest of its kind in the Midlands and among the busiest in the UK. It offers a wide range of subspecialty clinics including:

  • Epidermolysis bullosa (nationally commissioned service)
  • Mohs micrographic surgery
  • HIV and genital dermatology
  • Hair and psychodermatology clinics
  • Photodynamic and phototherapy services
  • Tertiary services for allergy, paediatrics, and complex cases

Academic activity is highly encouraged, with strong ties to a local medical school and involvement in undergraduate and postgraduate training. The department also hosts NIHR academic fellows and clinical trial staff.

The Location

Located in a thriving hub in the Midlands, this role offers the chance to work in one of the UK’s most dynamic and diverse cities. With a population of over a million people, this city blends rich cultural heritage with modern living.

The area boasts excellent transport links, including direct trains to London, a major airport and a well-connected motorway network. Residents enjoy an array of cultural attractions, music and arts venues, and award-winning restaurants. For families, there are outstanding schools and access to beautiful parks and green spaces.

The Requirements

Essential Criteria:

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist Register in Dermatology, or within six months of CCT at time of interview
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Experience in dermatology, including skin surgery
  • Effective communication and teamworking skills
  • A satisfactory health record over the last two years

Desirable Criteria:

  • Higher degree (MD, PhD, etc.)
