Join a well-established, forward-thinking Dermatology department that offers outstanding opportunities for career development, teaching, and sub-specialty practice in a region known for its natural beauty and high quality of life. We are working with a hospital that is seeking a full-time Consultant Dermatologist to provide high-quality care in general dermatology and develop a complementary sub-specialty interest.
Role and Responsibilities
This is a full-time, 10 Programmed Activities (PA) Consultant position in Dermatology. The post holder will provide high-quality dermatological care, including urgent "two-week wait" cancer referrals, and is expected to contribute to teaching, audit, clinical governance, and service development.
Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering dermatological care across outpatient clinics, surgical lists, and urgent referrals.
- Sharing clinical responsibilities and management of the department with consultant colleagues.
- Supervising and supporting junior doctors, specialty doctors, and nurses.
- Teaching medical students and participating in departmental teaching sessions.
- Participating in clinical audit, continuing medical education (CME), and research activities.
- Taking part in the advice and guidance rota for teledermatology referrals.
- Participating in weekly skin cancer MDTs and bi-monthly complex case clinics.
There are no overnight or weekend on-call commitments, but each consultant is responsible for covering one weekday per week for urgent inpatient and GP dermatology referrals, with cross-cover arrangements during leave periods.
Clinic templates typically include 12–14 patients per general clinic session. Peripheral clinics and outreach work are part of the service and travel time is factored into the job plan accordingly.
The Hospital
We are working with a large acute NHS Trust in South West England, serving a population of approximately 400,000, which increases significantly with tourism in the summer months. The Trust operates across three main hospital sites and numerous community locations.
The Dermatology Department is based in a dedicated, modern facility and includes:
- Three operating theatres
- A full outpatient suite
- A Mohs micrographic surgery unit
- A phototherapy and day treatment area
- Consultant offices, admin support, and a Mohs laboratory
The department offers a broad range of specialist services including:
- Mohs surgery
- One-stop skin lesion clinics
- Paediatric dermatology
- Cutaneous allergy services
- Nurse-led systemic therapy clinics (Isotretinoin, biologics, etc.)
- Teledermatology advice and guidance
The team comprises three consultants, one GU consultant, four associate specialists, three specialty doctors, and a highly skilled nursing team that includes nurse prescribers and trained dermatology surgical nurses. The department is research-active and supports clinicians in academic and clinical research in collaboration with the University of Exeter Medical School.
The Location
Located in a historic cathedral city in South West England, this region offers a balanced lifestyle. With a mix of coastal and countryside settings, the area is famous for its stunning beaches, surfing, sailing and hiking trails. There is a strong cultural heritage and excellent family-friendly amenities, including top-rated schools and leisure facilities.
Transport links are excellent, with easy access via the A30, regular train services to London (including a sleeper train) and domestic flights from a nearby airport to major UK cities.
The area is ideal for professionals seeking a better work-life balance, offering a slower pace of life, strong community feel, and access to one of the most naturally beautiful regions in the UK.
