The Job
A Trust in the South East Coast are looking for a Consultant Histopathologist to specialise in Gynae reporting to join their expert team and contribute to the Pathology Services of the region. The post holder will also be working alongside other Consultants that are reporting on a wide array of site-areas which will be discussed in MDT meetings.
The locations offers a blend of coastal charm and vibrant urban life. Located on the southeast coast of England, this historic town is renowned for its scenic beauty, with pebbled beaches, cliffs, and a rich maritime heritage.
It boasts a strong arts and cultural scene, with galleries, theatres, and annual events and has a thriving independent food and shopping scene, particularly in the Old Town, where narrow streets are lined with quirky boutiques, cafés, and restaurants.
Transport links are good, with direct train connections to London, making it popular for commuters. While the town offers a relaxed, seaside atmosphere, it also has easy access to nearby towns and the countryside, making it an ideal location for those seeking a mix of urban and rural living.
The Department
The department is proudly UKAS accredited and IBMS approved for training. It processes around 29,000 histology and 2,000 diagnostic cytology samples annually. The primary site handles specimen dissection, tissue processing, microtomy, staining, immunohistochemistry, digital scanning, and diagnostic cytology preparation.
Genomic testing in the NHS is provided through a national network that strengthens the laboratory services. The NHS Long Term Plan aims to create a world-class genomic testing resource through the NHS Genomic Medicine Service. This service is managed through seven Genomic Laboratory Hubs (GLHs), each serving a specific region. ESHT now utilises the services of the Southeast Genomic Laboratory Hub, led by Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
The department operates under a Managed Service Contract, featuring modern equipment such as ThermoScientific Excelsior AS Processors, capable of preparing large blocks when needed, and three Ventana Benchmark Ultra IHC modules, offering a wide range of antibodies. Recently, the department launched the SECTRA PACS digital reporting system, supported by three Hamamatsu Nanozoomer digital scanners at the Conquest site, marking the start of a two-year plan to digitise all specialities. Both sites provide a frozen section service, typically arranged in advance with the surgeon. Immunofluorescence is occasionally performed on skin biopsies, mainly for vesiculobullous disease investigation.
