Consultant Histopathologist - Interest in Urology Reporting
- £105,504 – £139,882
- North West
- Permanent
A Trust in the Northwest are looking for a Consultant Histopathologist to join their expert team in a large University Hospital and contribute to the Pathology Services of the region. The post holder will also be working alongside other Consultants that are reporting on a wide array of site-areas which will be discussed in MDT meetings.
Due to the nature of the hospital, they have the facilities to support IMGs through their CESR (Portfolio Pathway) application and have a strong track record of successful applicants. There is also a strong emphasis on CPD and progressing personal career interests.
The location offers a blend of cultural diversity, affordable living, and rich history. The city is home to beautiful parks, vibrant shopping areas, and a thriving arts scene, including the renowned National Science and Media Museum. With excellent transport links, including easy access to nearby Leeds and the scenic Yorkshire Dales, the location provides a balance of urban convenience and natural beauty. Additionally, its relatively low cost of living compared to nearby cities makes it an attractive place for families and professionals alike.
The Department
The Department processes around 23,500 surgical and 3,000 non-gynaecological cytology specimens annually. A Joint Venture, Integrated Pathology Solutions, has been established to deliver pathology services across the Trusts and surrounding areas. Over the next 3-5 years, analytical and clinical services will be integrated, with the first phase completed between January and April 2017.
Newly expanded facilities include four cut-up benches and frozen section preparation, with macroscopic photography available via the Macropath system. The laboratory is staffed by BMS and MLA staff, including one Laboratory Expert Practitioner who contributes to specimen processing. All specimens are processed at the histopathology laboratory at Airedale General Hospital, where new facilities opened in 2018.
The Leica Cerebro specimen tracking system is used for lab throughput and additional requests. The Trust's IT strategy includes an electronic reporting system integrated with the Electronic Patient Record. A new laboratory LIM system (Winpath) was introduced in 2023 as part of regional pathology consolidation.
Multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings are held weekly for various specialties, with remote attendance supported. MDTs take place at Bradford Royal Infirmary and St Luke’s Hospital, with the Breast Cancer MDTs at St Luke’s. Remote attendance is available for all meetings.
Coronial autopsies are performed at the City Forensic/Public Mortuary, which includes a forensic suite and post-mortem CT scanning. Although autopsy participation is not required, interest is encouraged, and one Trust consultant currently participates in the rota. Paediatric post-mortems are carried out under an SLA with Sheffield's Paediatric Pathology unit.
The successful candidate will have their own office with a diagnostic-quality microscope. New consultant offices will be available in early 2024. Digital dictation and voice recognition facilities are available, and the Trust is involved in the National Pathology Imaging Co-operative (NPIC) for digital pathology. Validation of digital pathology reporting for consultants will begin in December 2023.
