  • Location: Northern Ireland
  • Salary: £99,913 - £126,281
  • Contract: Permanent or Fixed-Term (12months with possible extension)

The Department

  • General Overview: The department handles a wide range of tissue samples from surgeries, diagnostic procedures, and treatments. This includes work from national screening programs for breast and bowel cancer. Consultants are general pathologists with specific areas of interest. New hires are encouraged to develop specialized skills, with some limitations on who can handle specific cases like breast pathology.
  • Specialist Reporting:Certain types of biopsies are processed and reported by specialist departments in different hospitals, such as:
    • Lymphoma biopsies in Belfast Health and Social Care Trust.
    • Muscle, nerve, and renal biopsies by specialist teams in Belfast hospitals.
    • Paediatric pathology in Liverpool.
  • Services Offered:
    • Immunocytochemistry and frozen sections are routinely done.
    • Molecular Pathology and Electron Microscopy services are accessible through associated labs.

Gynaecological Cytology Services:

  • Cervical Screening: Cervical samples are processed using a specific technique, with oversight and quality control by designated pathologists and coordinators. HPV testing is carried out at specific hospitals, and the cervical screening program is being reviewed for future changes.
  • Optional Involvement: The new appointee is not required to participate in cervical cytology unless they choose to.

Non-Gynaecological Cytopathology:

  • Reporting: Only pathologists with relevant training handle non-gynaecological cytopathology. While desirable, it is not essential for new hires to be trained in this area.
  • Breast Cytology: Rapid reporting for breast cytology is provided in a dedicated unit. Fine needle aspirations (FNAs) from other sites are also reported, often guided by imaging.

Post-Mortem Examinations:

  • Location: The department does not conduct post-mortem examinations locally. These are done by other hospitals or forensic departments, with deceased remains being transferred accordingly.
  • Regulation: The SHSCT holds a license for tissue handling but not for performing post-mortems.
