The Department

The department provides histopathology, non-gynaecological cytology, and autopsy services. Subspecialist reporting is employed, with consultants covering 2-4 subspecialist areas, led by a designated lead and deputy for each team. Participation in Multidisciplinary Meetings (MDMs) operates on a rolling rota by subspecialist teams. The department is recognised for its strong team spirit and open communication between technical and diagnostic teams.

MDMs for major cancer sites are established across the Trust, with consultants attending in person or via videoconferencing. Cellular Pathology holds 15 MDMs weekly, with two additional biweekly meetings. Each consultant typically attends 1-2 meetings per week.

The department has full UKAS accreditation (ISO 15189) and has seen significant workload increases since the centralisation of services. Facility upgrades were completed in 2012. Consultants are provided with a personal office, microscope, computer, and shared secretarial support, with reporting supported by a speech recognition system (Dragon), which has improved turnaround times and won a national IT award in 2009.

Specimen tracking is managed through the Cerebro system, and the department has access to various national and international journals. Diagnostic techniques, including immunohistochemistry, are available, along with facilities for photomicrography and digital image recording. The department is equipped with video conferencing links for MDMs across multiple sites, and it is exploring video desktop technology to enhance these meetings. Electronic systems like Q-pulse streamline document management, and post-mortem facilities have been upgraded.

The Trust works collaboratively with new appointees to tailor their job plan, reviewing it after three months and annually. Resources, including administrative support, are provided to ensure effective service delivery. General responsibilities include offering high-quality clinical services, leadership, maintaining ethical clinical practice, supporting other specialities, and contributing to education and postgraduate teaching.

Desirable subspecialist interests include breast, skin, gastrointestinal, soft tissue, and head and neck pathology, with flexibility to develop further areas of expertise. The post-holder is expected to participate actively in service provision, subspecialty development, MDMs, clinical audits, quality assurance, and continuous improvement. Participation in the Royal College of Pathologists' CPD scheme is required, with resources provided for study leave and regional/national meetings.
