The Job

A Trust in Scotland is looking for a Consultant Histopathologist to join their expert team and contribute to the Pathology Services of the region. The post holder will also be working alongside other Consultants that are reporting on a wide array of site-areas which will be discussed in MDT meetings.

Due to the nature of the hospital, they have the facilities to support IMG’s through their CESR (Portfolio Pathway) application and have a strong track record of successful applicants. There is also a strong emphasis on CPD and progressing personal career interests.

With a population of around half a million, this region features the scenic countryside of Angus and Perth and Kinross, bordered by the Highlands to the north and the coast to the east. The cities of Perth and Dundee are situated along the River Tay to the south. One of Scotland’s largest cities, it has transformed from an industrial centre to a vibrant waterfront, highlighted by the striking V&A design museum. The New York Times has called it “Scotland’s coolest city,” and it is also developing an Eden project.

The city’s historical identity as the “City of Jute, Jam, and Journalism” has evolved into a hub for education and innovation, with two major universities, and a thriving life sciences sector. Recently, the city has gained fame for its video game development industry. The cultural scene is lively, with venues such as Caird Hall, Perth Concert Hall, and Slessor Gardens hosting a range of music, from energetic live bands like The View and Snow Patrol to classical performances and traditional music in cosy pubs like the Fisherman’s in Broughty Ferry.

  • Salary: £105,504 to £139,882

The Department

All consultant pathologists have their own offices, and ergonomic support is available if needed. The department features modern digital pathology workstations equipped with Windows 10, Microsoft Teams, digital dictation, and voice recognition. There’s reliable network connectivity, and pathologists can access both macroscopic and microscopic digital imaging, including fluorescent microscopy. A newly refurbished MDT (multidisciplinary team) suite supports local and regional meetings with built-in video conferencing, and participation via Microsoft Teams is also available. The reporting room has an up-to-date library, and a new specimen tracking system has been installed to enhance processes in preparation for digital pathology.

In line with a culture of continuous improvement, several development projects are underway:

Digital Pathology

The department has a contract with Philips for a seven-year digital pathology project. Currently, there is one high-capacity Philips scanner on site and an Aperio CS2. A second UFS scanner and a "megablock" scanner will be delivered in year three. The system has been integrated with the laboratory IT system, and validation for digital pathology is starting. Negotiations are ongoing with other Scottish NHS Boards to enable cross-site collaboration and training.

Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)

The current LIMS used is Clinisys Labcentre with the wIntegrate interface. NHS Tayside is part of a national procurement programme for a new LIMS, with a temporary replacement using WinPath Enterprise expected soon as Labcentre approaches its end of life.
