The Department
The Pathology Service is one of the largest hospital laboratories in the region, employing over 35 Consultants, Clinical Scientists, Associate Specialists, Registrars, BMSs, MLAs, and support staff. The Cellular Pathology department plays a key role in supporting a large cancer centre, providing high-quality cancer diagnostic services. The department includes 17 consultant Histopathologists, 2 Specialist Doctors, 1 Consultant BMS, and a team of Dissection Practitioners, some of whom are undergoing further specialised training.
The department is home to a molecular laboratory with plans to expand its molecular testing capabilities in the future. It also features a modern mortuary and holds full accreditation under UKAS ISO 15189:2012 and a HTA licence for its mortuary services.
Histopathology specimens from an independent treatment centre are processed within the department. The department is fully computerised, using the iSOFT (Apex) system, which is being upgraded to improve IT connectivity and access to results across the network. All pathology disciplines are integrated online, with links to Radiology and the hospital's Information System. Historical records from 1983 are searchable for research, audit, and teaching purposes. Voice recognition software is used for reporting.
Consultants in the department are expected to engage in clinical governance activities, including participation in local and national audits, clinical guidelines, and risk management. The Trust supports Continuing Medical Education and provides both time and financial resources for these activities. The post holder will work collaboratively with managers and colleagues to ensure the efficient running of services and contribute to medical management.
The department offers a range of specialised tests, including special stains, immunofluorescence, and immunocytochemistry. Digital photographic and electron microscopy facilities are available. While specialised molecular pathology tests are currently outsourced, there are plans to develop in-house capabilities. Research opportunities are available through collaboration with an academic pathology department and a nearby translational oncology research centre.
