A Trust in South East/Greater London Area are looking for a Consultant Histopathologist with a sub-specialism in Cardiothoracic pathology to join their expert team in a large District General Hospital and contribute to the Pathology Services of the region. The post holder will also be working alongside other Consultants that are reporting on a wide array of site-areas which will be discussed in MDT meetings.

Due to the nature of the hospital, they have the facilities to support IMG’s through their CESR (Portfolio Pathway) application and have a strong track record of successful applicants. There is also a strong emphasis on CPD and progressing personal career interests.

The location of the post provides easy access and is well connected to central London, giving the post holder access to all the same facilities whilst having a lower cost of living.

The Department

The successful candidate will join a team of three Consultant Histopathologists specialising in Cardiothoracic Pathology. They also collaborate with oncologists to provide essential molecular test results for thoracic malignancies and support the Lung Cancer MDTs and the Regional Super MDT for mesothelioma.

You will work with other Trust colleagues to maintain high-standard pathology services. Two of the hospitals participate in the Lung Health Check programme, and the team meets national standards with the help of BHR Cellular Pathology. Digital Pathology images are accessible via Leica and Philips scanners, and remote working is supported by adequate equipment.

The successful candidate will handle all aspects of Cardiothoracic Pathology, including reporting biopsies, EBUS, thoracic and cardiac resection specimens, and various cytology samples. They will provide intra-operative diagnoses (frozen sections) and supervise the processing of pulmonary, mediastinal, and cardiac resection specimens. The candidate will also participate in multidisciplinary meetings, contributing their expertise for the best patient outcomes. The department is small but well-connected with other institutions in and outside the UK and has significant research potential. The department handled approximately 2100 histology requests in 2023 and expects a slight increase due to the Lung Cancer screening programmes.

Main Duties

  • This is a 10PA job with no out of hours requirements
  • The post holder will take part in the 10 weekly MDTs.  
  • Expectation to take part in Appraisal, Mandatory Training and MDT attendance are expected.
  • The SPA core time is provided and undertaken within the Trust but there is availability to work from home for up to 1 day a week (needs approval from Clinical Lead)

Requirements

  • Full GMC Registration
  • Recognised post graduate qualification (FRCPath)
  • Evidence of participation in CPD
  • Non-UK trained applicants need to show evidence working towards CCT equivalent (CESR/Portfolio Pathway)
