Key Details

  • Job Title: Consultant Histopathologist w/interest in Cardiothoracic pathology
  • Location: South East
  • Salary: £99,532 - £131,964
  • Contract: Fixed-Term (12 months with possible extension)

The Department

The successful candidate will join a team of three full-time Consultant Histopathologists, specialising in Cardiothoracic Pathology. This team provides histological and cytological diagnoses for patients with thoracic or cardiac diseases across three hospitals.   They also support the Cardiothoracic Centre by offering intra-operative diagnoses and reporting on surgical resection specimens. The team collaborates closely with oncologists from the hospitals to provide molecular test results vital for treating thoracic cancers and supports weekly lung cancer multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, including a regional MDT for mesothelioma.

The Cardiothoracic Histopathology department offers a comprehensive range of tertiary diagnostic services to the Essex area and beyond. Given the evolving nature of healthcare commissioning, a flexible working approach is essential for all consultants. The role does not require out-of-hours commitment. The pathology services are supported by digital pathology systems, enabling remote working and enhancing collaboration within the team.

The role involves participating in all aspects of Cardiothoracic Pathology services, including reporting on biopsies, surgical resection specimens, and various cytology samples. The new consultant will provide intra-operative diagnoses and supervise the processing of pulmonary, mediastinal, and cardiac specimens. They will also attend multidisciplinary meetings, contributing to patient care decisions.

The department, though small, is well-connected with similar institutions in the UK and internationally and has significant research potential due to the variety and volume of cases handled. It has already been involved in several multisite studies and continues to collaborate with national and international research institutions.

In 2023, the department handled around 2,100 histology requests, including surgical and diagnostic specimens, and reported a substantial number of respiratory and fluid cytology cases. The workload is expected to increase slightly in the next two years due to lung cancer screening programmes, making this an exciting opportunity to contribute to better outcomes for lung cancer patients.
