An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Clinical Oncology to join a dedicated and friendly team at a well-established cancer centre. This role primarily focuses on the management of breast cancer patients, with flexibility for a second tumour site for the right candidate. 

Role and Responsibilities

  • Working alongside two consultants specialising in breast cancer to develop and strengthen treatment opportunities for patients
  • Participating in and promoting an extensive and innovative clinical trials portfolio
  • Managing a designated clinical workload, including multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, outpatient clinics, radiotherapy treatment planning, and inpatient care
  • Developing and promoting protocols relating to treatment options for patients.
  • Taking part in the consultant on-call rota (1 in 12) to provide out-of-hours advice and emergency care
  • Providing supervision and teaching for junior medical staff and medical students
  • Ensuring compliance with all clinical governance procedures and maintaining Continuing Professional Development (CPD) accreditation as per the Royal College of Radiologists guidelines
  • Engaging in the Trust’s appraisal programme and GMC revalidation processes.
  • Contributing to departmental leadership and service development

The Hospital

This post is based at a leading cancer centre, which serves as the only Cancer Centre for the county. The centre is well-equipped and offers a full range of cancer treatments, including:

  • A large and active clinical trial portfolio, ranking among the highest recruiters for commercial trials
  • Cutting-edge radiotherapy treatments, with high national rankings for treatment complexity and machine usage
  • Commissioned services for Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR) to lung, bone, prostate, and nodal sites
  • A new state-of-the-art Haematology-Oncology Inpatient Unit, opened in 2023 following a £135 million investment

The oncology department benefits from a dedicated and highly skilled multidisciplinary team, including 11 Clinical Oncologists, a Medical Oncology Specialist, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Radiotherapy Physics staff, and a strong administrative team. The purpose-built cancer treatment facility, housing outpatient services, consultant offices, a clinical trials unit and specialist imaging technology.

This opportunity is based in a stunning part of the UK, offering an excellent quality of life. The area is renowned for its breathtaking coastline, sandy beaches and vibrant arts/theatre scene. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy a range of activities, including surfing, sailing, hiking, and equestrian pursuits. The region has excellent transport links, with direct rail services to London and an airport offering flights to national and international destinations.

With a population of approximately 450,000, the area has a strong sense of community and offers excellent schools, family-friendly leisure facilities, and a growing number of high-quality restaurants. The local healthcare system faces unique challenges due to the seasonal influx of tourists, adding to the diverse and rewarding nature of clinical practice in the region.

The Requirements

Essential criteria:

  • Full GMC registration
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (or proposed CCT date within six months of interview) for Clinical Oncology
  • Extensive experience in oncology, including clinical audit and governance
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Commitment to teaching and training junior medical staff and students

Desirable criteria:

  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR)
  • Experience in research and involvement in clinical trials
  • Experience working in a leadership role within an oncology department
