Consultant in Respiratory and General Medicine

This Trust on the south coast is seeking a Consultant in Respiratory and General Medicine to join their expert team. This role offers a fantastic opportunity to contribute to a dynamic respiratory department within a leading healthcare institution, in a beautiful coastal setting. This role would be particularly well-suited to applicants with an interest in COPD, complex pulmonary infection, interstitial lung disease, and/or pulmonary hypertension.
Role and Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive care to patients with respiratory conditions, ensuring high-quality clinical outcomes
- Participate in the acute medical take, delivering expert management for general medical patients
- Develop and lead sub-specialty services in areas such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), complex pulmonary infections, interstitial lung disease, and pulmonary hypertension
- Engage in multidisciplinary team meetings, contributing to collaborative patient care and service development
- Mentor and supervise junior medical staff, fostering a supportive educational environment
- Participate in clinical governance activities, including audit, quality improvement projects, and adherence to evidence-based practices
- Contribute to the on-call rota, ensuring continuous consultant-level support for acute medical services
The standard commitment is 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week, typically comprising 8.5 PAs for Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 1.5 PAs for Supporting Professional Activities (SPA). There is flexibility to adjust this allocation based on individual interests and departmental needs.

The Requirements
Essential Criteria:
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Inclusion on the Specialist Register in Respiratory Medicine or within six months of achieving Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at the time of interview
- Demonstrated experience in managing a broad range of respiratory conditions and general medical emergencies
- Commitment to continuous professional development and participation in clinical governance activities
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
Desirable Criteria:
- Sub-specialty expertise in areas such as COPD, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, or complex pulmonary infections
- Experience in teaching and mentoring medical trainees and other healthcare professionals
- Involvement in research activities with a track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals
- Formal management training or experience in leadership roles within a clinical setting
