A Trust in the South West is expanding the Consultant workforce and shortlisting for a Medical Oncologist to manage Breast and a secondary tumour site of your preference. The Trust has an excellent reputation for providing a range of specialist services and a friendly environment to professionally develop. This is a great centre to join if it’s your first time in the NHS or your first Consultant role as there’s an on-going and established mentoring process for new Consultants, so you will be allocated a Consultant Mentor to support you along with the Clinical Lead. The Clinical Lead will set objectives, relevant job plan adjustments and complimenting supporting resources to ensure you can progress and develop Medical Oncology experience and exposure. This includes dedicated time to finalise Specialist Registration via CESR/Portfolio pathway.

The Oncology department meet weekly to discuss patients due to attend clinic to enable joint decision making and ensure patients receive the highest quality care. This also creates a cooperative and cohesive environment to learn and develop professionally and build good relationships with colleagues. Time for clinic administration is highly valued and prioritised and for each 1 PA (= 4 hours) of clinic, there is 0.5 PA ( = 2 hours) of time allocated for clinical admin, along with an additional 1 PA for general or additional administration duties. The department really values research and encourages consultants to work with the clinical trials team to recruit for a number of on-going trials.

The main duties and responsibilities will be:

  • Partaking in site-specific outpatient clinics

  • Partaking in research activities and recruiting patients to clinical trials
  • Participating in clinical governance activities such as audit and quality improvement

Cancer Centre

The Cancer Centre is based in the largest hospital of the Trust and provides Clinical and Medical Oncology inpatient and outpatient services to all common tumour sites as week as an established Acute Oncology Service. The Cancer Centre cares for the population of the local county of around 500,000. There is a newly built oncology outpatient and day case treatment centre providing state-of-the-art facilities. Oncology inpatient facilities are provided in the main Cancer Centre as well as the periphery hospital sites. The Radiotherapy Department includes VMAT/IMRT for most planning cases, Canon Aquilion large bore CT simulator, Elekta Versa and Synergy and linear accelerators, XStrahl superficial x-ray unit, mould room and workshop, Elekta Mosaiq Oncology Management System, AcQSim Virtual Simulation and Pinnacle Treatment Planning System. There’s also a dedicated Multidisciplinary Team Meeting room and a Seminar Room, used for a range of meetings for different purposes including clinical and educational, audit, clinical trials and management discussions. Consultants are expected to actively contribute to departmental morbidity & mortality meetings and quality improvement projects, where appropriate.

This is a tight-knit and friendly Oncology team of 14 Consultants, 1 Specialist, 2 Specialty Doctors, Foundation Year doctors and an increasing number of Clinical/Medical Registrars on training rotations. Cancer Services are also supported by Cancer Nurse Specialists who contribute to Multidisciplinary team meetings. Along with the educational lead for Oncology, Clinical and Medical Oncology Consultants are involved with teaching and training junior doctors and ST3+ registrars and are responsible for their appraisals and tuition.

Requirements

  • Full GMC Registration with License to Practice (essential)
  • Ability to practice independently at Consultant level in Medical Oncology (essential)
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent post-graduate qualification (desirable)
