An NHS Trust in Greater London is seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated Consultant Microbiologist to join their dedicated and dynamic team. This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to the provision of high-quality microbiology services within a supportive and innovative environment.

The Job

As a Consultant Microbiologist, you will serve as a proactive and dynamic link between clinicians, patients, and the laboratory service. Your role will involve providing expert advice on timely and appropriate investigations for microbial diseases and offering professional direction for the laboratory service.

Collaborating with senior Biomedical staff, you will be expected to ensure regular review and update of investigative repertoires and methodologies, alongside medical reporting, result interpretation, and patient management advice. You will become an integral member of the Trust Infection Control Team, an contribute to the teaching of medical and other healthcare professionals when appropriate.

Comprehensive internal arrangements ensure the provision of a 24-hour medical microbiology service, including cover for annual and study leave.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical microbiology and infection control services to the Trust.
  • Lead and manage the microbiology laboratory, ensuring compliance with national and international standards.
  • Collaborate with clinical teams to provide expert advice on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases.
  • Participate in the on-call rota, providing 24/7 microbiology and infection control support.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of clinical guidelines and protocols.
  • Engage in teaching and training activities for medical staff, students, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in audit and research activities to enhance the quality of care provided by the Trust.
  • Work collaboratively with public health authorities in the management of communicable diseases.

Criteria

  • Full registration (and a license to practice) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or eligibility for registration
  • FRCPath or equivalent qualification in microbiology.
  • Extensive experience in clinical microbiology and infection control.
  • Proven leadership and management skills within a clinical setting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and education.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team. 

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in medical research and publication.
  • Involvement in national or international microbiology networks.
  • Additional relevant postgraduate qualifications or certifications.
  • Previous experience in a similar role.
