An NHS Trust near the south coast of England is seeking a Consultant Paediatric Radiologist to join their expanding radiology team. This is an excellent opportunity for a consultant with an interest in paediatric imaging to work in a forward-thinking and well-supported department, with access to excellent facilities and a friendly, multidisciplinary team.

Role and Responsibilities

The successful applicant will play a key role in providing high-quality paediatric radiology services within a dynamic radiology department. You will join a team of consultant radiologists and contribute to both the general and specialist imaging needs of a busy paediatric unit.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing diagnostic imaging and interpretation for paediatric patients
  • Supporting both elective and emergency paediatric services across the Trust
  • Participating in MDT (multidisciplinary team) meetings and case discussions
  • Teaching and supervising radiology trainees and junior doctors
  • Engaging in service development initiatives and quality improvement activities
  • Maintaining high standards of clinical governance and contributing to audit and research where appropriate

The department supports flexible working and the successful candidate will be expected to participate in a rota covering weekday duties and on-call commitments as required. A willingness to take part in the wider radiology on-call rota is desirable, although participation can be negotiated based on specialist skills and service needs.

There is also scope to develop a subspecialty interest alongside paediatric radiology, such as musculoskeletal, oncology or neuroimaging, depending on departmental requirements and the candidate’s experience.

The Hospital

This role is based at a major NHS Trust that is one of the largest and busiest in the country, with a total of over 2,000 beds across three hospital sites. The Trust provides a full range of acute services, including a regional trauma centre, a dedicated children’s hospital, and a large maternity unit. It is also a teaching hospital affiliated with a local university and is involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate education.

The radiology department is modern and well-equipped, with advanced imaging technology including MRI, CT, ultrasound, and digital radiography. The Trust’s children's hospital offers a full range of paediatric subspecialties, with the radiology team playing a key role in supporting neonatal, surgical, and intensive care services.

The radiology team works in close partnership with other clinical departments to ensure comprehensive and coordinated care. The department is actively engaged in teaching, training, and clinical research, with opportunities for consultants to pursue academic interests if desired.

The Location

The hospital is located in a vibrant city in the south of England, known for its rich history, diverse communities and excellent transport links. The city has a population of over 350,000 and offers a mix of urban living, green spaces and family-friendly amenities.

With excellent rail and road connections, the area is easily accessible from major cities including Birmingham, Nottingham and London. The surrounding region offers picturesque countryside and market towns, making it ideal for those seeking a balance between city and rural life.

Local schools are well-regarded, and the city is home to several universities and colleges. There is also a thriving cultural scene, with museums, galleries, theatres, and music venues, as well as a wide range of shops, restaurants and sporting facilities.

The Requirements

Essential criteria:

  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register for Clinical Radiology (or eligibility within six months of interview)
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists or equivalent
  • Substantial experience in paediatric radiology
  • Evidence of participation in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement activities
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary setting
