This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to join one of the most reputable Hospitals in the Northwest of England, as a Locum Consultant in Anaesthetics. It's not just an outstanding post in which to improve your clinical, leadership, research & audit skills, it's your chance to join their friendly anaesthesia team and be at the heart of a new development in the primary base for the Trust.
A multi-million-pound investment has allowed for a complete modernisation and rebuild of multiple hospitals in the Trust, with state-of-the-art treatment facilities. The Trust boasts a high field 3 Tesla MRI scanner as well as a DEXA scanner. Your Consultancy role will be clinically vital but you'll be a high-profile expert in an organisation with a more far-reaching impact - boosting the life expectancy of local people & acting as a catalyst programme for the city's future prosperity.
In medical terms, you'll be working across different specialties & across different MFT sites in order to develop sub-specialisation. You could be an experienced Anaesthetic Consultant already or completing your CESR. Whatever your current status, the impact you make here will be felt immediately and carry a legacy that will echo into the future.
The Department
The department of anaesthesia is opening 2 brand new operating theatres in time for summer 2024 and will need Consultants to help cover the new additional workload. You will be joining an extensive team, with 38 full time consultants as well as 12 part time consultants. In addition, there are 8 Critical Crae consultants who also cover a minimum of one day of anaesthetics a year. The department covers elective surgeries in: General, Plastic and Reconstructive, Burns, Urology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Orthopeadic and Gynaecology.
Main Duties of the job
There are 2 new theaters opening in the summer of 2024, which has a created over 30 new elective theater sessions. There are a multitude of subspecialties that will be covered in the role, allowing for a range of exposure in clinical skills. There may also be a requirement to cover duties at sister hospitals in the area all within a 15 minute drive of each other.
Maternity Unit:
- 4000 deliveries per year (aprox.) with a rate of 20% for on demand epidural.
- Required regional anesthesia for over 90% of caesarean sections
- Increasing numbers of regional blocks for emergency caesareans
General Surgery & Urology:
- 26 general surgical sessions per week
- 9 urology theater sessions per week including both endoscopic and intra-abdominal surgery
- 24 hour emergency surgery service
Burns and Plastic Surgery:
- 4 plastic surgery theaters
- 4 major plastic surgery theaters with one for specifically for burns and one for day cases
- 26 plastic surgery sessions and 2 burns sessions a week
Gynaecology
- 12 gynaecological surgical surgery sessions
Pain Medicine and Acute Pain
- Techniques include regional blockades and patient-controlled analgesia
Ophthalmology
- Surgery includes vitreo-retinal surgery
ENT
- Routine ENT procedures on both adults and children
Trauma and Orthopedics
- Special interest in spinal, shoulder and revision of joint prosthesis surgery
Critical Care Unit
- Full renal support and extensive ventilatory treatment including oscillation
Paediatric Anaesthesia
- Will be managing children 5 and older
- Difficult cases will be referred to the sister hospital
Opportunities for development
Opportunities for CESR support and development, with a range of sub-specialties available on site for different clinical exposure. Specifics can be discussed with Consultants upon attending an interview
Teaching
The Trust has a commitment to the teaching of trainees at all levels. The successful applicant would be expected to participate in both informal and formal teaching programmes for all levels of junior medical, nursing and paramedical staff where appropriate. The department also offers half-days for dedicated preparation for FRCA examinations. There is a very active Postgraduate Centre in the Education, Research and Teaching Centre (ERC), which also contains two lecture theatres, seminar rooms, a large library and computer rooms, laboratories and offices.
Clinical Governance & Audit
The Directorate of Anaesthesia hold regular clinical governance, management and quality audit meetings in which the appointee is expected to participate. These meetings are Consultant led, with two designated lead clinicians and a part share in a full-time audit facilitator. Four full day audit sessions take place per annum. During these sessions, a variety of anaesthesia and intensive care related audits are presented. There are also multidisciplinary audits. Trainees are encouraged to participate in data acquisition and presentation. Trainee hours and consultant supervision are audited on a monthly basis. Attendance at the audit meetings is required.
Requirements
In order to apply for this role, you will need:
- GMC Registration complete (or awaiting ID check)
- Recognized post graduate degree (EDAIC, EDIC, MRCP, FRCA, USMLE)
- Language test (OET or IELTS)
- ECFMG verification
- Experience in a similar position overseas or locally (Consultant/Locum Consultant)
- Preferably having experience in the NHS at middle grade/consultant level
