The Department

In the operating theatre complex, elective and emergency surgery patients receive anaesthesia. The complex comprises of 6 main theatres, 3 day surgery theatres, and 1 obstetric theatre. The obstetric theatre and CEPOD theatre are available 24 hours a day. A resident anaesthetic consultant is available for CEPOD from 8 am to 6 pm on weekdays and for a part of the day on weekends. On weekdays, there are ten consultant sessions for maternity, and dedicated trauma lists are available seven days a week. The department also has consultants with sessional commitments for acute pain, and specialist preoperative assessment is scheduled where appropriate. Monthly audit and educational days are organized that are free from elective commitments. Trainees attend a teaching half-day on Thursday afternoons, and all consultants take turns teaching. There is a departmental office with IT facilities and secretarial support. Consultants and permanent staff have their work time-tabled onto the CLW rota, ensuring that they are working to an agreed contract.

Main Duties

The advertised position is a 10 PA role (8DCC, 2SPA), but the number of PAs is open to negotiation. The post holder will be able to work in various surgical disciplines, including obstetrics, orthopaedics/trauma, ENT, maxillofacial surgery, trauma, and general surgery with high-risk colorectal/breast cancers. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to develop their own subspecialty interests, and candidates with an interest in peri-operative medicine and gynae oncology are particularly welcome. The allocation of sessions will be discussed regularly to meet the needs of the Trust and the individual, and the post holder is expected to contribute to the development and delivery of all aspects of the service. The department has flexible working practices, and the successful candidate may be rostered at times for alternative lists than those in the existing timetable. On-call arrangements are 1 in 16 frequency for general on-call on weekdays and weekends, which are split. Post on-call days are free of clinical commitments. The department will work with the post holder to shape the ideal job plan upon successful appointment and will review it after three months and then annually. The essential resources, including administrative support, will be provided to support the post holder in their duties.  

Role specific duties:

  • Provide safe, evidence-based care, anaesthesia, and analgesia.
  • Maintain and improve standards and quality of anaesthetic services.
  • Supervise and train junior staff including Doctors in training
  • Maintain skills and update knowledge base meeting the Continuing Education and Professional development requirement of the Royal College of Anaesthetists
  • Participate in the Audit programme of the Department
  • Lead tutorials and Department meetings, in rotation with other consultant staff.
  • Participate in the Consultant on-call rota
  • The successful candidates will inevitably have responsibility for resource utilisation and would be expected to be aware of and take part in Directorate business planning process which governs new development.

The department works flexibly to provide support across the three acute sites and to provide the best possible care for patients in the region and support colleagues.

Teaching

The Trust is passionate about teaching, and the successful candidate will have a role in teaching the next generation of doctors, nurses, and other clinical staff. They will be responsible for helping to recruit junior staff and supervising their education, including their educational contracts, regular appraisal, study leave, annual leave, and rotas. Additionally, they will need to keep up-to-date on educational development. For newly appointed consultants, they will need to enroll in an approved educational supervisor accreditation course by the medical educational department. 

Requirements

In order to apply for this role you will need:

  • Full GMC Registration (or you have been invited to the ID check stage) 
  • Recognised post graduate degree (e.g. EDAIC, EDIC, MRCP, FRCA, USMLE)
  • English Language Test (OET or IELTS)
  • EPIC verification (via the ECFMG) of your primary and post-graduate medical qualifications
  • Experience in a similar position overseas or locally (Consultant/Locum Consultant)
