A brilliant NHS Foundation Trust in Yorkshire is searching for a dedicated Locum Consultant Haematologist to join their team. This is a fantastic opportunity for both experienced consultants looking for a new challenge and newly accredited consultants seeking support through well-regarded development programs.

Role and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will join a team of five substantive Consultant Haematologists, providing high-quality care for both malignant and non-malignant haematological conditions. Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading outpatient clinics, including urgent fast-track slots for suspected cancer cases
  • Providing inpatient care and consultations for referrals from other specialties
  • Participating in the online advice and guidance service for GPs and blood film reporting
  • Contributing to the care of patients receiving salvage regimens for lymphoma and level 2a care (excluding intensive AML induction)
  • Collaborating with a team of Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Haematology Specialist Nurses
  • Participating in a 1 in 6 on-call rota, providing senior support across the Trust’s hospital sites
  • Engaging in teaching responsibilities for junior doctors, medical students, and paramedics
  • Attending regular MDT meetings and ensuring continued professional development through Supporting Professional Activities (SPA)

This full-time post consists of 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), with flexibility for part-time applicants. The job plan includes 7.5 PAs of direct clinical care, 1.5 PAs of SPA, and 1 PA allocated for on-call duties.

The Hospital

The Trust operates across two main hospital sites, with this role being primarily based at the site of inpatient care. Cross-site working will be required. The Haematology department is well-supported with dedicated Advanced Nurse Practitioners who manage follow-up clinics, bone marrow biopsy lists, PICC line insertions and telephone advice services. The team also benefits from Haematology Specialist Nurses, a robust secretarial tea  and access to national clinical trials.

The Requirements

Essential: 

  • GMC registration with a license to practice
  • Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register for Haematology or eligibility within six months of appointment
  • Relevant experience in Haematology, including inpatient and outpatient care
  • Strong commitment to clinical governance, patient safety, and high-quality care
  • Willingness to participate in the on-call rota and cross-site working

Desirable: 

  • Sub-specialty interest in a relevant area of Haematology
  • Experience in clinical trials and research
  • Demonstrated interest in teaching and training junior staff
