The Job

We have an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Medical Oncologist to join an NHS team in Greater London.

The department are looking for passionate and skilled individuals to start as soon as possible. You'll be joining a dedicated oncology unit that offers a full range of specialized outpatient clinics, supported by an incredible team of consultants, Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs), and a multidisciplinary team. The unit also provide systemic anti-cancer treatment (SACT), blood product delivery, and a variety of complementary and supportive services.

As part of this role, you'll be delivering outstanding oncology care, attending clinics, multidisciplinary team meetings, and taking part in consultant ward rounds for our Acute Oncology Service. There’s also the chance for some cross-site working, allowing you to collaborate with different teams and broaden your experience.

The Department/Service

Consultants typically cover two to three tumour sites to develop a high level of specialist knowledge. The estimated number of new patient referrals per year for the breast and lower GI tumour streams is 520 and 200, respectively.

Systemic cancer therapy is delivered locally in shared cancer and haematology units. This arrangement allows efficient treatment delivery and fosters a close working relationship between oncology and haematology departments.

The Acute Oncology team is highly proactive, ensuring that all patients with cancer-related or treatment-related issues are seen and reviewed within 24 hours. Acute oncology is central to cancer care, connecting acute and specialty teams with palliative care, radiology, histopathology, nursing, and social care. This approach ensures tailored care and appropriate management in the right setting. The Trust was the first in the country to implement a successful 7-day service. While day-to-day care remains with admitting teams, the acute oncology team provides additional support for oncology patients as needed. Consultants conduct daily ward rounds Monday to Friday, reviewing an average of 10-12 newly admitted patients. On weekends, a nurse-led service is available, with out-of-hours oncology cover provided externally.

The Trust operates multi-disciplinary teams (MDTs) for various cancer types, including breast, lung, colorectal, upper GI, urology, skin, gynaecology, haematology, and unknown primary malignancies. Oncologists play a key role in these regular meetings. Less common tumours, like sarcoma, are managed by external MDTs.

An active research department, supported by research nurses and clinical trial practitioners, focuses on recruiting patients into clinical trials, both academic and commercial. Collaborating with the Research & Innovation department, there is significant potential to expand recruitment, particularly in commercial trials.

Responsibilities:

  • In this role, you’ll be delivering a comprehensive oncology service, with the potential to work across sites.
  • You’ll take part in clinics, MDT meetings, and contribute to the Acute Oncology Service (AOS) by leading a consultant ward round once a week.
  • Your focus will be on breast and lower GI cancers, with each clinic session typically including one new patient and six follow-up appointments. You can expect to see around 150-180 new patients a year.
  • Don’t worry—you’ll have great support from a dedicated team of consultant colleagues, Clinical Nurse Specialists, acute oncology nurses, cancer pharmacists, and clinical trials nurses!

As part of this team, you'll enjoy fantastic learning and development opportunities to help you grow and advance your career.

The Trust also offer flexible and agile working options, along with all the great NHS perks like generous annual leave, a solid pension, and access to exclusive NHS discount schemes.

In this role, you’ll also have the exciting responsibility of developing an oncology clinical trials portfolio. You’ll even have the opportunity to spend part of your time at a nearby regional Cancer Centre to strengthen clinical trials connections.

You'll be fully supported by an experienced Clinical Trials Unit, which includes a fantastic team of trials nurses and data managers, so you’ll have everything you need to succeed!
