We are working with an NHS Trust in the Midlands seeking a dedicated Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist with an interest in Glaucoma and Cataract to join their supportive team. This exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team delivering high-quality care to patients across a range of subspecialties. You will provide expert medical services, including outpatient clinics, surgeries, and inpatient care.

Role and Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading and supervising clinical services within your area of expertise
  • Participating in a 1:5 on-call rota, ensuring continuous care for urgent ophthalmological cases
  • Contributing to departmental meetings and multidisciplinary team discussions to optimize patient outcomes
  • Supporting the development and training of junior doctors, medical students, and other healthcare professionals
  • Engaging in audit and research activities to enhance the department's clinical standards
  • Promoting and upholding the Trust's values in all aspects of care delivery

This is a full-time position with a standard working week of 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), with flexibility for additional PAs depending on service needs. Successful applicants will be encouraged to develop their subspeciality expertise.

The Hospital

The hospital is a forward-thinking NHS Trust, home to around 300 inpatient beds and a modern outpatient facility dedicated to ophthalmology. The department offers general ophthalmic care, a high-volume cataract service, medical retina service, glaucoma service, ROP screening and paediatric outpatients. It is well-equipped with advanced diagnostic and surgical tools, including OCT scanners, YAG lasers, and a fully equipped day-case theatre suite.

Serving a diverse population, the Trust is known for its patient-centred care and commitment to innovation. The ophthalmology department boasts a close-knit team of consultants, specialist nurses, and orthoptists working together to provide comprehensive services ranging from cataract surgery to treatment of complex retinal conditions. The Requirements

Essential criteria: 

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Ophthalmology (or eligibility for inclusion within six months of the interview date)
  • Fellowship or equivalent experience in a relevant subspecialty
  • Proven experience in managing a broad range of ophthalmic conditions, including surgical cases
  • Excellent communication and team-working skills

Desirable criteria:

  • Experience in subspecialty areas such as medical retina or glaucoma
  • A track record of academic or research contributions in ophthalmology
  • Teaching experience at undergraduate or postgraduate levels
