One of the UK’s most successful NHS foundation trusts is expanding the consultant workforce with 3 openings available in a selection of tumour sites. The main specialist requirements are in Breast, UGI, Thyroid and Urology, however there will be an option to have a flexible secondary sub-site if you have other areas of interest. You’ll be provided with a supervised induction to the role as well as a mentor to provide on-going guidance and support to ensure you feel fully comfortable in-post. The mentor can advise on progressing to Specialist Registration via CESR/Portfolio pathway, and the job plan can be adjusted accordingly in the job plan review to ensure adequate exposure to NHS practice. The role is based primarily in the specialised Cancer Centre, with some responsibilities in the other hospital sites, depending on the job plan, and you’ll be working closely alongside multidisciplinary teams within the specified cancer areas. Applicants with a specific interest in academia and research will be welcomed and there will be time to prioritise time for these activities in the job plan. As a consultant within the Trust, you’ll also ne encouraged to support as a clinical lecturer the teaching and training of junior medical staff and undergraduates/postgraduates. The main expectations and duties of the job plan will be as follows:
- Radiotherapy planning
- Prescribing SACT
- Managing patient related admin
- Supervising acute oncology ward
- Contributing to site specific multidisciplinary team meetings
- Supporting new patient and follow-up outpatient clinics
- Supporting professional activities, including research
- Continuing medical education
- Participating in on-call services infrequently
- Partaking in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training

Cancer Centre
This is an opportunity to join a Teaching Hospital Trust with a specialised Cancer Centre. The Trust has close to 19,000 employees, many of which are international medical graduates. The Cancer centre has a SACT day unit, inpatient oncology wards and acute oncology assessment unit. Outpatient facilities are based in the main Cancer Centre as well as in local district general hospitals.
The Cancer Centre has one of the largest Radiotherapy centres in the country offering state-of-the-art equipment and research, including stereotactic radiotherapy and stereotactic radiosurgery. There are Varian Linear Accelerators, with OBI and portal imaging, IMRT software and VMAT RapidArc. There’s also Xstrahl superficial/orthovoltage low energy radiotherapy machine, PDR Selectron for gynae, and Virtual Simulators (spiral CT scanner).
As a Teaching Hospital Trust, there’s a large workforce of medical staff including specialty doctors, specialty registrars, core medical trainees and foundation year doctors, and the consultants will be expected to supervise the junior team. There is also a purpose-built Cancer Research Centre and cancer clinical trials centre, with a team of research nurse, assistants and data managers. There are usually over 100 trials being managed a time. The research work is closely linked with the local Universities and regional Cancer Research network.

- Whilst this is a large city, is it also very compact and accessible, with reliable public transport locally as well as good transport links to access the rest of the UK. There are a couple of national and international airports nearby
- Housing is affordable and there’s a range to choose from within the centre of the city and in neighbouring towns and villages if you prefer a quieter life
- The cost of living in the region is comparatively lower than the rest of the UK so the quality of life is excellent
- There are a couple of popular and successful Universities in the city as well as plenty of grammar and state schools for all ages with top ratings
- This is one of the greenest cities in the UK, with lots of parks and woods within the city, as well as a beautiful open countryside nearby. It’s great if you enjoy outdoor sports (climbing, running, walking, biking)
Requirements
- GMC Registration with License to Practice (essential)
- Ability to practice independently at Consultant level (essential)
- MRCP, FRCR or equivalent post-graduate qualification (desirable)
