NHS Specialty Doctor in Haematology

A leading University Teaching Hospital in a very popular location in the Northwest are looking to add a Specialty Doctor in Haematology to support a well-established multidisciplinary team, as part of their service expansion. This is a permanent 10 PA (40 hours p/w) contract with 1:10 on call rota commitments covering weekdays and weekends., working alongside the other Specialty Doctors in Haematology to deliver specialist BCSH Level 3 Haematology care to the surrounding population, as a leading referral centre.

The Trust will actively support your professional development as an NHS Haematologist and will assign you a formal CESR supervisor that will work with you to secure your remaining portfolio competencies to complete your GMC Specialist Registration application. Alongside this, regular non-clinical training sessions will be available to support your development in sub-specialist you are looking to develop your skillset in. The Department run regular FRCPath and MRCP teaching sessions and you will be encouraged to attend these if you are working towards your Fellowship exams. There will be a degree of flexibility in the job plan to help you sign off competencies for CESR and you will be encouraged to pursue your own sub-specialist areas of interest. You can expect the following duties and responsibilities

The Job

• Managing patients under supervision of Consultant team and supporting clinic lists
• Attending regular teaching sessions and CESR support meeting
• Caring for patients in the Day Unit
• Conducting rounds with the Consultant team and support juniors
• Morphology and Haematopathology training
• Partaking in undergraduate teaching (if desired)
• Recruiting and managing patients eligible for clinical trials
• Contributing towards multidisciplinary team meetings
• Dedicated time for Supporting Professional Activities

Haematology Centre 

This is a renowned regional Teaching Hospital running a specialist BCSH Level 3 Haematology service for an approximate population of 700,000 that is renowned for training, research, and supporting overseas trained Haematology doctors through the CESR process towards GMC Specialist Registration. The centre run a tertiary referral service for acute leukaemia and autologous stem cell transplantation for the Northwest population of approximately 1.6 million. The Trust have a regional collaborative agreement with neighbouring centres and have an excellent pathology service supporting the clinical team. Alongside the Haematology service, there is a tertiary referral level Oncology service working in conjunction with the Haematology team and a full scope of sub-specialist medicine teams on-site to support.

Acute Leukaemia Service

The Haematology department are very active in trial recruitment for Acute Leukaemia, having entered 70 patients into AML16, as the fifth highest recruiting centre out of the 149 centres that entered patients into this trial, and the 2nd highest recruiting centre in England. The department have also recruited 100 patients into AML17, placing the Trust as the 2nd highest recruiting centre in the UK. Additionally, the department also recruited three patients into the VALOR study, a relapsed/refractory trial in AML.
 
 To support the Acute Leukaemia work there are very good radiology services, with access to high resolution CT scans for the investigation of fungal disease. The Trust have very close links with the Critical Care Department, as well as having dedicated Microbiology Consultant support. There is also a dedicated myeloid MDT with surrounding hospitals every fortnight via a video link which discusses all new diagnoses of acute leukaemia. This MDT tracks the patients if they are proceeding towards an allogeneic procedure, and it also follows up the patients after their procedure.   

Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation Service

The Haematology department have a dedicated Stem Cell Transplant Clinical Nurse Specialist and two apheresis machines to support the service. Stem cell harvests are performed on site and the stem cells are then transferred to be stored and processed at the National Blood Service Centre in Liverpool. The stem cells are returned to us from Liverpool when required for transplant. The main indications for transplantation are relapsed lymphoma and the upfront treatment of multiple myeloma.   In 2021, 46 autologous stem cell transplants were performed. Second transplants for multiple myeloma are also now undertaken and increasing in number.

The department has full JACIE accreditation. To ensure the required quality standards for stem cell transplantation are maintained, fortnightly Haematology Quality Meetings are held to discuss the many aspects of the service. The department have a dedicated Quality Manager to support this quality programme.

• Full GMC Registration (or invitation to ID check) – essential
• Specialty specific experience in Haematology – essential
• Specialty specific post graduate qualification  in Haematology – desirable
• MRCP or FRCPath – desirable
