Paediatrics Consultant - Interest in Paediatric Epilepsy

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Paediatrician with a special interest in epilepsy to join a dedicated team in South West England. This role offers the chance to work in a well-supported paediatric department, providing high-quality care to children and families. The successful candidate will contribute to general paediatric services, while also playing a key role in the development and delivery of epilepsy care within the hospital.
Role and Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality care to general paediatric and neonatal patients, ensuring the highest clinical standards
- Lead and support the paediatric epilepsy service, participating in specialist epilepsy clinics and multidisciplinary meetings
- Share responsibility for the day-to-day management of the child health department alongside consultant colleagues
- Take part in the general paediatric on-call rota (non-resident, 1:10 frequency), including daytime and evening shifts
- Participate in teaching and training junior staff and medical students
- Engage in clinical governance, audit, and service development activities
- Collaborate with the epilepsy nursing team, psychologists, and paediatric neurologists to enhance epilepsy care
- Attend regional and national educational forums, such as the South West Interest in Paediatric Epilepsy (SWIPE) group
The Hospital
The hospital is a key provider of healthcare services in the region, catering to a population of approximately 400,000 people. The paediatric department consists of 22 consultants and a full multidisciplinary team delivering comprehensive general paediatrics, neonatal care, and specialist services. The children's unit includes:
- 29 inpatient beds, including three HDU beds and an eight-bedded surgical day case unit
- A dedicated paediatric assessment unit with a short-stay observation area
- A well-established adolescent ward with 10 beds
- A Level 2 Neonatal Unit with 20 cots, providing full care for infants above 27 weeks gestation
- Access to neurophysiology services, including EEG, CT, MRI, and ultrasound investigations
- Close collaboration with regional paediatric neurology services for epilepsy management and surgical referrals

The Requirements
Essential Criteria:
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
- CCT in General Paediatrics (or equivalent) or eligibility within six months
- Proven experience and commitment to general paediatrics
- Valid Level 3 Safeguarding Training
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
Desirable Criteria:
- SPIN module in Paediatric Epilepsy
- Experience in paediatric epilepsy care
- Additional postgraduate qualification (e.g., MD, MSc)
- Experience in research, service development, or management roles
