Role and Responsibilities

The successful applicant will play a key role in the delivery of high-quality care in both general paediatrics and paediatric respiratory medicine. The post forms part of a wider strategy to expand and enhance respiratory services across the region. Alongside your sub-specialty focus, you will contribute to the general paediatrics rota and provide input to acute and out-of-hours care.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing consultant-led care in general paediatrics and respiratory medicine.
  • Participation in a 1:9 non-resident on-call rota for general paediatrics, with separate consultants covering neonatology.
  • Evening consultant shifts (17:00–21:30) on weekdays, compensated with time off in lieu.
  • Outpatient respiratory clinics, including adolescent transitional care and joint clinics with ENT and neuromuscular services.
  • Ward rounds and short-stay paediatric admissions management.
  • Teaching and supervision of junior doctors and medical students.
  • Involvement in service development, clinical governance, research, and audit activities.

The role is supported by a robust multidisciplinary team including respiratory nurses, physiotherapists, dieticians, psychologists, and specialist clinical staff.

The job plan comprises 10 programmed activities, with approximately 8 for direct clinical care and 1.5 for supporting professional activities such as teaching, audit, and management duties.

The Hospital

This opportunity is based within a leading Trust, serving a population of approximately 400,000 people, significantly increasing during the holiday season. The Trust encompasses three main hospital sites and provides a comprehensive range of medical and surgical services.

Key facilities and services include:

  • A 20-cot Level 2 Neonatal Unit (LNU), offering ICU, HDU, and SCBU cots.
  • A 25-bed Transitional Care Ward.
  • A 10-bed Adolescent Ward, staffed by experienced adolescent care nurses.
  • Specialist clinics in endocrinology, oncology, cardiology, gastroenterology, and more.

The paediatric respiratory service is well-developed and offers care for children with conditions such as cystic fibrosis, severe asthma, sleep-disordered breathing, and neuromuscular respiratory failure. Diagnostic and therapeutic services include home ventilation, capnography, fitness to fly testing and biologic therapies.

The hospital is a recognised teaching centre affiliated with a Russell Group medical school. Facilities include a modern academic building housing teaching spaces, research facilities and a medical library. Opportunities to be involved in medical education and research are well supported.
