Role Overview

Are you ready to take on a pivotal role in transforming cancer care? We are looking for a passionate Radiation Oncologist Consultant with expertise in Head & Neck and Breast cancer to join our dynamic team! In this fulfilling position, you will primarily engage with patients in outpatient clinics, while also providing vital inpatient care for new cancer diagnoses and managing treatment complications. Your journey will include on-call duties, attending multidisciplinary meetings (MDMs), inspiring the next generation by teaching medical students and registrars, and diving into innovative research projects.

Team and Facilities

Join a dedicated oncology team that spans multiple hospitals, delivering top-notch cancer care across the region. Our team is celebrated for its supportive and collaborative culture, where we gather regularly for educational sessions, case discussions, and governance meetings. With modern radiotherapy services and exciting plans to enhance access, you will be equipped to deliver the best possible care. Outpatient oncology clinics and chemotherapy units are conveniently available at several locations, making patient access seamless.

We place a strong emphasis on research and education, actively engaging in clinical trials and forming partnerships with local medical schools and universities. With the support of local charities and Macmillan Cancer Support, we have established resources like the Horizon Centre, a dedicated hub for cancer information and support. As a new Consultant, you’ll play a vital role in managing non-surgical care for Head & Neck and Breast cancer patients and collaborating closely with the oncology teams on comprehensive treatment plans, including radiotherapy and systemic therapies.

Our commitment to diversity is reflected in our plans to expand the team, bringing in consultant pharmacists and physician associates, enhancing nurse-led clinics, and developing Advanced Clinical Practitioner roles for specialist radiographers. Your clinic sessions will be primarily based in designated locations, with scheduled time for team meetings, professional development, and peer support. You will have access to laptops with patient records, imaging, and essential software, alongside shared office spaces and secretarial support across our facilities.

Your workload will primarily involve outpatient care, alongside responsibilities for inpatient cases, especially for newly diagnosed cancer patients and those facing treatment complications. The role includes four regular outpatient clinics, with an expected weekly patient load of approximately eight new patients and 20 follow-up appointments.

We are committed to your professional development, providing opportunities for peer review and ongoing medical education through regular discussions, meetings, and presentations. With trainee registrars rotating through the department, you'll enjoy frequent opportunities to teach and mentor the next generation of oncologists.

  • Plan and manage radiotherapy treatments, including brachytherapy

  • Attend clinical governance meetings and conduct ward reviews as needed

On-Call Commitment: The on-call schedule is currently under review, likely around once every 17-18 weeks. While occasional emergencies may arise, these duties are not expected to be regular.

Learning and Development

We believe in nurturing talent and promoting growth! As part of your journey with us, you will:

  • Complete all mandatory training as needed
  • Engage in job-related training and development in collaboration with your manager
  • Set and achieve personal and professional development goals
  • Identify your learning needs and plan training with your manager
  • Participate in the appraisal process to discuss your contributions to patient care and service improvements
