Join one of the largest acute University Hospital Trusts in the country, treating over half a million patients each year. This is a rare opportunity to work in a non-training post which mirrors medical oncology specialty training support and exposure, providing an excellent foundation to NHS medical oncology practice and long-term support to develop to a consultant level via CESR/Portfolio pathway, or to get the necessary requirements to apply for ST3 training. You’ll be assigned a consultant educational/clinical supervisor and maintain an educational portfolio to regularly professional progression and establish career goals, for example to work on further post-graduate examinations such as a MRCP UK. There are also regular educational and clinical governance meetings and regional Oncology study days. There are a wide range of opportunities to participate in clinical trials, clinical audit and quality improvement projects. It is a full-time post with the following responsibilities:

  • Providing care for oncology in-patients and consultant led ward rounds
  • Attending Medical Oncology clinics
  • Prescribing SACT
  • Participating in the on-call rota
  • Supervising junior doctors and clinical nurse specialists in oncology
  • Teaching junior doctors and supporting education programmes and journal clubs
  • Contributing to multidisciplinary team meetings
  • Implementing specialist care for new patients and patients with cancer treatment complications
  • Assisting Acute Oncology Team
  • Recruiting and managing patients into Clinical Trials
  • Supporting Oncology Day Unit
  • Continuing medical education and professional development
  • Participating in Audit and Clinical Governance and contributing to Governance Groups and Mortality/Morbidity meetings

Cancer Centre

The Cancer Centre is a purpose-built facility in the main Hospital Site. There’s a combined Haematology/Oncology inpatient ward well-staffed by trained specialist nurses. The Acute Oncology Service has dedicated AOS treatment beds for solely for patients with cancer treatment complications and managing emergency cancer symptoms. There’s a well-established radiotherapy department providing state-of-the-art equipment and doctors hoping to pursue a career in Clinical Oncology are encouraged to apply as there will be opportunities to undertake radiotherapy planning in the future. The Trust has a dedicated oncology research team of research nurses, radiographers, pharmacists and clinical trials assistants, maintaining a large portfolio of active clinical trials.

The Requirements

  • Full GMC Registration (essential)
  • Specialty specific experience in Oncology (essential)
  • MRCP (UK), FRCR (UK) or equivalent post-graduate qualification (desirable)
