This is a new post that sits between Specialty Doctor grade and Consultant grade. It was created to give doctors an opportunity to focus on providing direct patient care at a Consultant level but a little less responsibility than a Consultant. It is perfect for those wanting to take the next step in their career.

As a Specialist you will be expected to act as a senior decision maker, being able to work in acute medicine independently will be really important. The department is staffed by a friendly team of doctors who have proven very welcoming of both IMGs and UK based doctors in the past. 

Main Duties: 

  • The appointment will be for 10 programmed activity sessions which will be divided into 8 PAs as Direct Clinical Care, 1.5 SPAs and 0.5 PAs as admin time.
  • Conduct ward rounds in a timely manner, making sure all electronic documentation is complete in line with trust policy.
  • You will have hands-on involvement with medical admissions to the Acute Medicine Unit, focusing on timely assessment, management and discharge.
  • As a senior member of the team you will supervise junior doctors, ANPs & nurse consultants seeing patients in our medical SDEC & on AMU. You will also be expected to teach and train medical students from the local medical school.
  • There is no commitment to the general physician on call rota (though this can be negotiated if required).
  • You’ll be encouraged to pursue a special interest as part of your SPA hours.
  • It is expected that you will participate in research involving the acute medicine department.
  • You will be required to maintain and develop your clinical skills through continued professional development.


The Hospital:

The hospital is a medium-sized district general hospital, encompassing many specialties. The site has been recently refurbished and comes with state-of-the-art facilities. The department have a good track record with helping doctors through CESR, one of their current consultants are currently being supported through the process now. The workforce within the hospital is very multicultural, much of the clinical staff started their careers overseas before moving to the UK.


The location:

The East Midlands is one of the most popular places to live in the UK, its multicultural and comes with a low cost of living. 

The hospital is based in a city but has countryside within 30 minutes, so you’ll have the choice of basing yourself in an urban or rural environment. You’ll have everything you need here, given its so multicultural you should be able to find people with similar backgrounds relatively easily too. If you’re coming with children, you’ll be glad to know he city includes multiple schools rated both ‘Good’ and ‘Outstanding’. 

Being based in the East Midlands you are a short 2 hour train journey from central London and if you wanted to visit family who are living overseas then Birmingham International Airport is 60 minutes by road. There is also excellent transportation to the rest of the country and other cities (Bristol, Manchester, Leeds).


Requirements:

To apply for this position, you will need the following as a minimum:

  • GMC registration complete or in process
  • MRCP 
  • 12 years experience or more experience
  • Previous experience of working independently within an acute medical setting 

The following are preferred but not essential: 

  • SCE Acute Medicine
