As a Specialty Doctor in General Medicine, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality senior level care to acutely unwell patients presenting to the General Internal Medicine department and the Short Stay Unit. This opportunity is suitable for those who are looking to work at a level between ST3 and Consultant, likely with the view to work towards CESR and step up to a Consultant position in the NHS.
Main Duties:
- You will be responsible for receiving and assessing patients, ordering diagnostics and managing further treatment for patients who present a range of medical conditions.
- You will be leading daily ward rounds as a Specialty Doctor, referring to Consultants when necessary. You will also be participating in Acute Medicine on-calls and getting involved in sub-specialty clinics.
- You will be required to attend Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings when required.
- You will be expected to actively participate in the teaching and training of junior doctors, nurses and AHPs.
- Continuous professional development (CPD) is important as a Specialty Doctor. You will be expected to keep your clinical skills up to date through regular CPD and make full use of your study leave.
- You will also be expected to involve yourself in any research projects concerning the Medicine directorate.
The Hospital:
This opportunity is based at a 400-bedded hospital in the North East. It is a district general hospital with a wide range of clinical services, with large coverage across Internal Medicine specialties. The doctor team is comprised of a range of Foundation Doctors, Core Medical Trainees, Specialty Trainees, and Consultants.
The General Medicine team put an emphasis on team work and are keen for all clinical staff to engage in their process of continuous learning and improvement. The team are also committed to helping individuals through the CESR process. As a Specialty Doctor you will be assisting with training and teaching to junior doctors and other members of the team.
The location:
The hospital is based in the North East of England, close to two major cities in Leeds and Sheffield. This is one of the most sought-after locations for doctors moving to the UK. Cost of living is low, so you have greater spending power with your take home salary. It’s an incredibly culturally diverse region with access to international markets, shops and restaurants. There is good access to an international airport for ease of visiting family and friends overseas. There are 10 schools locally that are rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, and a further 50 rated ‘Good’.
Requirements:
As well as current NHS Specialty Doctors and Registrars, the team are open to discussions with doctors with overseas Registrar/Consultant experience and have helped many international doctors to settle into the NHS.

- Occupational English Test (OET) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
- GMC Registration either waiting ID check or complete
Desirable:
- Acute Medicine SCE exam
- NHS experience
