Specialty Doctor Paediatrics and Neonatology

1998
  • £52,530- £82,400
  • North West
  • Fixed

BDI are working with this welcoming Trust to find an excellent specialty doctor to work in their Paediatric and Neonatology departments. The hospital has a level 2 neonatal unit and excellent links to a well-renowned tertiary neonatal centre for transfers of critical cases. They are highly supportive of professional development and are looking for the right individuals to help through the CESR programme to get onto the specialist register.

Main Duties:

  • Cover General Paediatrics wards and the level 2 neonatology unit.
  • Attend Paediatrics outpatient clinics.
  • Participate on the on-call rota, currently working to 1 in 8.
  • Attend postgraduate education sessions.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to junior doctors and other members of the Paediatric team, including nurses, AHPs etc.

The Hospital & Paediatrics Department:

This is a state-of-the-art hospital with around 300 beds. It provides a comprehensive range of services including acute medicine, general surgery, maternity, orthopaedics, paediatrics, special care baby units, ICU, and stroke.

The hospital has a level 2 Neonatal unit and 17 General Paediatrics beds, the flow of work can be quite variable, sometimes being a full unit and sometimes being a comparatively quiet shift. It is an interesting place to be a Paediatrician as transfer is arranged with a large teaching hospital for more critical cases. There is excellent Consultant involvement in the Paediatric team so all of the doctors are very well supported.

There are five Consultants with specialist interests including neonatology, asthma/allergies, cystic fibrosis, oncology, critically ill and injured children, endocrine and diabetes, and cardiology.

Continuous Professional Development:

The Specialty Doctors currently work 8.5 PAs of direct clinical care (inclusive of the on-call rota) and have 1.5 PAs per week for supporting professional activity. Each Specialty Doctor will have a mentor for career advice and CPD.

The post holder will be expected to actively participate in audits and quality improvement for the Paediatric department. There is also a department teaching programme all specialty doctors contribute towards, as well as postgraduate lectures and clinical meetings. Further, the team have said they can help support the right candidates through CESR to become a substantive Consultant to invest in their staff and their CPD long term. They can work to arrange secondments with the tertiary Neonatal unit in their network.

The location:

The hospital is located in a friendly town with good transport links to major cities such as Liverpool and Manchester. The area has a very large educational budget meaning the level of schooling is excellent. It offers many opportunities to get out into the countryside and explore, with good access to beautiful beaches. It has a very low crime rate compared with much of the UK so is a safe place to relocate, especially with a family.

Requirements:

To apply for this position, you will need the following:

  • Full MRCPCH
  • Recent experience in both Paediatrics and Neonatology
  • Ability to resuscitate neonates and children
  • Experience working night shifts / on-calls
