Senior Clinical Fellow Acute Medicine
As a senior clinical fellow in the NHS you will be seen to set an excellent example for junior doctors and support them where needed. You will work alongside the Consultants and other department to ensure the best quality of patient care is carried out.
Main Duties:
- Based in the Acute Medical Unit.
- Work alongside nurses and medical colleagues to manage and clerk unselected admissions in AEC and AMU.
- Seeing complex patients and general medical cases too
- You’ll be working a full middle grade on-call rota alongside the Registrar/Senior Clinical Fellows from across the medical sub-specialties.
- Nights and Weekend work will be included
- Career progression is available for those who want to step up to Consultant level.
- Support and supervise junior doctors in the delivery of clinical care.
- Ensure your own practice is up to date. Take responsibility for Continued Professional Development.
- Take part in clinical audits, research and teaching others.
- Communicate with other departments clinically and managerially
The Hospital:
This position is based in a thriving, busy hospital in East Midlands, although it is busy you will join a friendly, supportive team! The Trust is developing strategies to ensure rapid assessment and treatment of all emergency cases with close working between the acute physicians and other specialties.

As an ST3+ Registrar in Acute Medicine you will be responsible for delivering high quality care to acutely unwell patients presenting to the hospital. You will be treating patients displaying a wide range of acute medical emergencies, so no two days are the same and there is great opportunity to learn.

Registrar in Acute Medicine

The Acute Medicine Registrar team contribute essential middle grade clinical decision making, working alongside junior and senior colleagues to provide high-quality care. This is the perfect role for someone looking for an exciting new opportunity in the NHS, to join a dynamic team of medics at the forefront of patient care in the hospital.
Acute Medicine is an excellent sub-specialty to imbed yourself in as it gives you a wide range of skills in the NHS across the breadth of Medicine, where you see many different types of cases. It is particularly suited to doctors joining from overseas with experience in Internal Medicine, ED and Medical ICU.
Main Duties:
- As an Acute Medicine Registrar, you will be responsible for delivering clinical leadership in Acute Medicine.
- You will work closely with teams from across a wide range of departments in the hospital.
- The post-holder will participate on the Registrar oncall rota, alongside trainees and other non-training Registrars. The oncall rota is currently run on a 1:11 basis and includes days, twilights, night and weekend shifts.
- You will be expected to supervise junior doctors on the wards. You will also be teaching junior doctors, both in bedside and classroom settings.
- To identify patients for early discharge and arrange any further required management.
- Take an active part in the daily handovers.
The Department & Hospital:
The Acute Medical team are a crucial part of the hospital structure as they exist as an initial part of a medical patient’s pathway through the hospital. The Acute team receive patients from the Emergency Department, GPs, and other community services. SDEC is co-run with the Acute and Emergency Medicine teams. This is part of the NHS plan to reduce admissions into hospital beds by enabling rapid assessment, diagnosis and treatment and, if safe to do so, sending the patient home the same day.
Covering the MDU, SDEC and AMU means you’re managing different types of cases on different shifts meaning no two days are the same. The Acute Medical Unit is based close to the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, and Radiology and you will work closely with these teams.

The team, and wider hospital, have done a lot of international recruitment over the last 3 years so understand very well what support an international doctor requires to settle into the new job. The induction period is well implemented to ensure you get the support you need from your team.
The Trust are committed to continuous professional development and have a great track record of either helping people through the CESR pathway or to continue into a formal training role. The postholder will contribute to quality improvement projects within the department. You will get a Consultant supervisor throughout your contract to assist with your continuing professional development.
