The Post
BDI Resourcing is seeking an international doctor for a Specialty Doctor Emergency Medicine post within a London NHS Trust.
You will join a friendly and supportive department who will also provide you with IELTS exemption.
Duties and Responsibiltiies
- You will be expected to lead assessment, resuscitation, management and safe transfer (where necessary) of seriously ill and injured patients, provide supervision to junior staff and undertake regular teaching and education sessions. You would be required to play an active role in the day-to-day management and administration of the ED, ensuring all targets are achieved andhigh quality, safe patient care is delivered.
- To provide senior doctor leadership and management of the department in collaboration with the nurse in charge, ensuring patients are managed within the A&E clinical indicators and receive timely and safe care.
- To be proactive in ensuring that all patients receive rapid assessment, treatment and clinical decision making.
- To oversee and support the F2/GP VTS junior medical staff and emergency nurse practitioners.
- To assist the consultants in the training and education of the junior staff. To have clinical responsibility for patients admitted into the observation beds on the emergency floor in accordance with the agreed protocol.
- The post holder will be expected to actively participate in the departmental audit and clinical governance programme as part of their revalidation, together with the senior doctors teaching programme.
- Communicate with general practitioners will include telephone discussion of problems and writing of letters about cases seen in the department
- Communicate with other hospitals and special departments in other hospitals
Post Duties and Responsibilities
You will be required to hold full MRCEM/MRCP to evidence your knowledge and skills.

Role:
The post-holder will:
- provide direct clinical care for patients presenting to the ED
- be responsible for the initial assessment, management and discharge or referral of patients to specialist teams
- provide timely and effective review of those patients initially assessed by the post-holder (or handed over by junior or Consultant colleagues), both in the main department and of those patients subsequently admitted to the Clinical Decision Unit.
- provide clinical advice and support to the one FY1, Senior House Officers and nursing staff on the management of individual patients and ensure appropriate prioritisation of patient care
- assume the role of Trauma Team Leader when the Trauma team is activated
- assume the role of Team Leader for any cardiac arrests occurring in the Department
- respond to a major incident call out and deliver clinical care in accordance with the Trust’s Major Incident Plan
- be responsible, with the Nursing Shift Leader, for efficient floor management including deployment of junior medical staff
- ensure that accurate, timely and sufficiently comprehensive information is communicated to our patients, their carers and General Practitioners. This includes the clinical coding of every patient episode and the provision of discharge letters for all patients and for those sent to CDU.
- liaise with colleagues within the Department, specialist teams providing inpatient care, the Clinical Site Practitioners, the Psychiatric Liaison Team, Rapid Response Service and the 6 statutory, voluntary and other bodies involved in the provision of patient care within the community

The successful applicant will join the emergency department (ED) team working in the new Emergency Care Centre opened in February 2015. The successful candidate will work on a full shift junior ED rota.

The department sees approximately 95,000 new attendances per annum covering the full spectrum of acute illness and injury that is seen in a busy district general hospital. The EM consultant body has several areas of specialist interest and specific training would be provided in; paediatric emergency medicine, core and enhanced emergency ultrasound, hand surgery, education and simulation. The department runs a daily review clinic and a weekly paediatric review clinic. The emergency department is responsible for the inpatient care of head and chest injuries. There are established programmes of teaching, audit and research that the successful applicant would be encouraged to partake in.
