Consultant Acute Medicine
The team are looking for a dedicated Acute Medicine Consultant to join their expanding team. This is an exciting time to be joining as the role of Acute Medicine continues to grow in patient pathways through the hospital. In conjunction with the NHS long term plan of expanding SDEC and focus on Frailty cases, you’ll be joining a multidisciplinary team providing diverse acute care.
Main Duties:
- The applicant will be responsible for the assessment, investigation and management of acutely unwell adult medical patients.

SDEC is open 10:00 – 22:00, with Consultant presence from 11:00 – 19:00. SDEC receives referrals from the Emergency Department, the Acute Medical Take, GPs, community referrals, and the ambulance service.
- You will also be working closely with colleagues in the Acute Frailty Unit, aiming to reduce unnecessary admissions of elderly patients to the hospital.
- There is also Acute Medical Consultant presence in the Emergency Department to help with diagnoses and referral to the AMU.
- Acute Medicine Physicians are also heavily involved in managing the Acute Medical Take.
- To be part of the Acute Consultant on call rota, which at present is 1:7 weekends.
- Working alongside the acute oncall team, which is largely medics from the general medical specialties.
- This is a 10 PA contract, which consists of 8.5 PAs of direct clinical work and 1.5 PAs per week Supporting Professional Activities.
- As a senior member of staff you will be involved in teaching junior medical staff, alongside nurses, AHPs, and other members of the Acute team. This may be classroom or bedside teaching.
- The team are focussed on maintaining high standards of care so you will be expected to partake in quality improvement / audit / clinical governance activities.
- There is also the option to undertake your own research, as well as supervising junior doctors’ research.

You will be joining a team of Acute Medicine Physicians who are committed to maintaining a standard of high-quality care. The Acute Medical Unit is situated close to the Emergency Department, SDEC, Acute Frailty Unit, and Radiology department. The Acute Medicine department is part of the Division of Medicine, which encompasses all general medical sub-specialties and the post-holder will be expected to work closely with these teams.

Trust Registrar in Respiratory Medicine
You will be part of a dedicated team providing exceptional respiratory care and vital respiratory research. You will be expected to focus on the delivery of acute and outpatient respiratory support but you will also be required to work the General Medicine rota as well. The main responsibility will be to look after the patients on the dedicated respiratory assessment unit and respiratory wards, you will also be tasked with supervising junior doctors within department. As a Respiratory Medicine Registrar, job responsibilities will include:
- Provide inpatient care for patients on respiratory wards.

Specialty Doctor in Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC)
As a Specialty Doctor in Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) your role will be to administer ambulatory care to medical patients in the Urgent Care unit. The aim of this role is to help improve the effectiveness and quality of emergency care in the region.
SDEC is part of the NHS plan to provide effective and well managed care to patients who don’t need to be admitted to a hospital bed overnight. This model ensures that patients are treated in the right areas, improving patient flow. Patients in SDEC can receive rapid assessment, access to diagnostics, and effective treatment. The patient may need ongoing outpatient care, in a clinical or community setting, but this model usually means they are able to go home that day.
SDEC ensure that patients aren’t stuck in hospital for overly long periods of time, which particularly benefits the elderly as they can smoothly return to care in their homes and community. It also means that Acute Medical Units and Emergency Departments have a greater capacity to treat critical patients.
The Job
Your role as a Specialty Doctor will include:
- Your role falls within the Acute Medical team and you will largely be working alongside Acute Physicians. There will always be an Emergency Medicine Physician on shift in SDEC as well.
- In SDEC you will also be liaising frequently with other teams, including the Emergency Department and other medical sub-specialties within the hospital, as well as Ambulance staff, General Practitioners, and social services.
- The contact is for 10 PAs (40 hours per week) with potential for an additional 2 PAs (48 hours per week). You will be expected to participate on a 1:4 weekend oncall rota.
- You are entitled to 1.5 onsite SPAs per week, this should be used for continuous professional development, e.g. training, audits, courses etc.
- As a senior member of the team you will be expected to participate in the management of the team, including teaching and training of junior doctors and quality improvement within the department.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join and expand further a dynamic and well-respected Acute Medicine team in the North West of England.
The post:
- This is a post to support management of patients within the Acute Medical Unit.
- The postholder will be supervised by a named Consultant with adequate administration time allocated.
- The role includes assisting the Consultant on the ward rounds, acute follow up and ambulatory clinics.
- The appointed Doctor will have the opportunity to show personal initiative in the running of services for assessment of ambulatory care patients
Duties:
- You will be encouraged to participate in the postgraduate education programme, audit and research and will also be allowed time and funding for study leave according to the Trust policy.
- Be involved in the care of new arrivals.
- Help the acute/general medical take and support the on-call registrar.
- Be involved in writing discharge summaries and communicating with GPs on any follow up investigations (admin time provided).
- To liaise with other health care organisations, social services, general practitioners, voluntary organisations.
- To competently perform procedures, teach and supervise junior team members to do procedures.
