As a Specialty Doctor in Acute Medicine you will be working as part of a dynamic team handling any acute medical cases that come into the hospital. You will experience a great deal of variability encountering a range of clinical problems. Your work will be split between the Ambulatory Care Unit, Acute Medical Unit, the Short Stay Unit and treating Acute medical cases in the Emergency Department.

As a middle grade doctor, you will also be required to demonstrate a range of leadership skills. Overnight you will be the most senior member of the team at the hospital (with a consultant on call if needed). You will also be expected to supervise and teach junior doctors. You will:

  • be a senior member of the code blue team/rapid response team.
  • take patient histories and make diagnoses.
  • manage acute patients across the breadth of Medicine, including elderly patients.
  • communicate effectively with patients, colleagues and family members.

The Job

As a Specialty Doctor in Acute Medicine, you’ll be treating a wide range of Acute Medical cases as part of a team. You will be working in a multidisciplinary team and liaising regularly with other specialties within the Trust to provide high quality patient care.

The job itself will consist of:

  • Being a clinical leader in the treatment of Acute Medical cases in the hospital.
  • Liaise with the Consultant team and other departments to plan patient care.
  • Being part of the acute medicine on call rota.
  • Training junior doctors and interns.
  • Keeping accurate records and completing discharge summaries
  • Teaching postgraduate and undergraduate students.
  • Protected teaching time.
  • Involvement in research, audits and quality improvement projects.

The Requirements

  • Relevant postgraduate qualification (MRCP, MRCPI, USMLE, PLAB, Sri Lankan MD etc.)
  • IELTS or OET if you are coming from overseas
  • GMC Registration complete or in process
  • Experience in a similar role whether in the NHS or elsewhere
