Trust Grade Stroke Medicine

This is a new post that sits between Specialty Doctor grade and Consultant grade. It was created to give doctors an opportunity to focus on providing direct patient care at a Consultant level but less on the other clinical and non-clinical responsibilities required of a Consultant.

The Trust is able to offer a flexible job pattern around the candidates own personal circumstances. The team is committed to providing continuous service improvement with opportunities for everyone to become involved.

Specialists also have opportunities to access an increasing number of continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities through different national initiatives. They're regularly involved in teaching, leading service development, and research.

Main Duties:

• Act as one of the responsible Consultants for the management of patients admitted to the Acute Medicine Unit.
• Supervise and run the Ambulatory Care Unit.
• Support the medical on-call team.
• Provide senior clinical support to the multi-disciplinary team (MDT). Liaise closely with ED, medical and critical care, in-patient teams and primary and community services to ensure collaborative working arrangements are in place, which maximise benefits to patient care.
• Support and teach junior medical staff.
• Participate in clinical governance activities including clinical audits, incident reporting, risk management, complaint reviews, CPD. Each specialty has a Consultant Clinical Governance lead.
• Promote a friendly and team-based working environment.
• There are opportunities to undertake research. There are University and Trust research facilities available to use for interested doctors.

The hospital is a medium-sized district general hospital with a CQC rating of ‘Good’. The hospital has a reputation for delivering high standards of care to the local population. The hospital offers a range of development opportunities for medical professionals including a tailored educational plan. The hospital has a good track record of helping doctors get their CCT through CESR and would be willing to offer the same dedicated support for the successful applicant.

The location:

You’ll be based on the southern coast of England just an hour’s train journey from London.

The area has a high standard of living and a range of attractive towns and villages to choose from. The county boasts some beautiful countryside, historic towns, and a range of cultural attractions, making it a great place to both work and live.

You’ll be based in a town that has excellent transport connections to London. This can make it easier for international doctors to travel around the UK and access other parts of the healthcare system.

The standard of local schooling local to the hospital is fantastic. It’s a safe, family-friendly area to live which benefits from a good mix of urban and rural style of living.

The Trust are looking for a highly motivated and experienced clinician to work as part of their Registrar set up within Acute Medicine. This role will suit doctors who have a sub-specialty interest in Respiratory Medicine they’d like to pursue; doctors who are looking to gain their first year of NHS experience to get into the training system; or doctors who are simply looking for their next non-training role at Registrar level.

Main Duties:

• You will be required to take responsibility for the diagnosis, treatment and management of patients based in the respiratory department and those coming through the front door.
• Participate in the General Medicine on call rota.
• Keep patient notes up to date.
• Take an active role in any multi-disciplinary team meetings to ensure patients with conditions across specialties are given a high standard of care.
• Take responsibility for teaching junior doctors, nurses and medical students.
• Keep clinical knowledge up to date with CPD, you will be allocated a period of study leave to for this.

The Hospital

You will be based at a medium sized district acute general hospital which was recently redeveloped 10 years ago. The hospital has a reputation for being very supportive of doctors coming straight from overseas so tends to be a good starting point if its your first role in the NHS. The hospital has been accredited as one of the UK’s top research centers, you will be encouraged to participate in the research taking place that involves the Respiratory department.

The location:

The hospital is located in a large town on the south coast of England. It’s a popular spot for holidaymakers in the summer… You’ll be able to benefit from some wonderful coastal scenery which includes some of the country’s nicest beaches.  You’re only a couple of hours away from London via car or train here. The town has a diverse, cosmopolitan population and has a reputation for being a great place to raise a young family.

Main Duties:

• Providing senior clinical opinions and being responsible for leadership, management and decision making in the AMU.
• Participate in the AMU weekend Consultant on-call rota, which is 1:8 weekends, shifts from 08:00 to 14:00.
• This is a 10 PA post, 8.5 of these PAs will be clinical work, with the remaining 1.5 SPA dedicated to CPD, appraisals, research etc.

Requirements:

As well as current NHS Consultants, the team are open to discussions with doctors with overseas Consultant experience, or UK middle grades looking to step up to a Consultant level, as well as a range of other profiles.

As an Acute Medicine ST3+ you will play a crucial role in the management of the unselected acute take. This is an important role in providing effective and high-quality care for acute patients presenting to the hospital. 

The Job

• As an ST3+ in Acute Medicine you will be contributing to the Acute Medicine team as well as the wider Medicine Registrar rota. There is an on-call expectation which is currently 1:8.
• You will be collaborating with, delegating to, and supporting the wider multidisciplinary team.
• The Acute Medicine team manage the Acute Assessment Unit (AAU), Acute Medical Unit (AMU), and the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC).
• The Acute Assessment Unit is for assessing and triaging patients through the hospital and therefore improving patient flow. Same Day Emergency Care is for patients who are acutely unwell but who can be managed without the need for a bed, therefore do not need to be admitted overnight. The Acute Medical Unit is for patients who are acutely unwell and must be admitted into a hospital bed. Registrars in Acute Medicine will be on the rota to cover these three parts of the Acute take at various points throughout the week, so the work is varied.

The hospital is based in a beautiful part of southwest England. It is in a very popular tourist destination which people visit from all around the UK on holiday. You have great access to some beautiful beaches and countryside for when you want to get out and explore.

The Hospital

• The hospital is an 850 bedded hospital with a wide range of medical inpatient services, including A&E, Acute Medicine, Cardiology, Diabetes and Endocrinology, Dermatology, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Neurology, Respiratory, Rheumatology, Stroke Medicine, etc.
• This is a University Teaching Hospital so you will be teaching undergraduate students.

• You will be actively participating in audits and quality improvement projects.
• The team are committed to supporting the right individuals through the CESR route.
