Locum Consultant in Intensive Care (with optional Anaesthetics work)

£88,364- £119,133

Your role as a Consultant Intensivist in this team would be to provide high quality Critical Care and emergency and/or elective work. You will be given a prime opportunity to develop and enhance your clinical skills, especially in the assessment and management of acutely ill patients. You will be expected to have excellent team-working skills with the abilities and professional attitude to work well in a multi-professional team. In addition to delivering clinical and quality targets agreed both nationally and locally with clinical teams and commissioners.

The Department

The department you would be joining is an 18 bedded combined ICU / HDU which was opened in March 2009 and is fully equipped to manage up to 18 Level 3 patients, it includes 5 side rooms, and the main area is light and spacious with pendant services to each bed space giving plenty of room to work without feeling restricted.

The unit provides critical care services to all departments in the trust and has a 7 day a week Outreach service and a consultant led follow up clinic. In addition to this the hospital also has a busy Interventional Cardiology Suite and the ICU manages patients on Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps with consultant cardiologist support.

There is an active audit and research program and they have recently finished an RCT as well as 3 portfolio studies. There is weekly formal teaching of trainees and specialty doctors alike, and the unit is recognized for basic ICM training.

During the day 2 resident Anaesthetists, trainee or specialty doctor and 2 consultants are allocated to critical care to manage the patients.  There are multidisciplinary Consultant led ward rounds at 08:00 and 17:00 and a joint round with a Consultant microbiologist daily. There is an excellent team of highly trained and dedicated nursing staff, with a nurse practice facilitator to aid with nurse training and skill mix.
 


Main Duties of the job

  • To deliver high-quality patient care in line with national standards whilst working both in the Critical Care Department and the wider hospital
  • To share responsibility with consultant colleagues for the day-to-day running of the Critical Care Unit
  • To actively participate in departmental meetings, including monthly mortality & morbidity, monthly clinical governance, monthly consultant meetings and weekly MDT meetings
  • To work alongside colleagues in expanding critical care services
  • To review patients as and when requested by the Critical Care Outreach Team, or new referrals from other specialties
  • To maintain CPD activity and engage fully with Appraisal and Revalidation processes
  • To have oversight and responsibility for quality improvement activity undertaken by junior staff within critical care
  • To ensure educational value for junior doctors during ward rounds and patient interactions in critical care, whilst also enhancing the development of nurses and allied health professionals

Requirements

In order to apply for this role you will need:

  • GMC Registration complete (or awaiting ID check)
  • Recognized post graduate degree (EDAIC, EDIC, MRCP, FRCA, USMLE)
  • Language test (OET or IELTS)
  • ECFMG verification
  • Experience in a similar position overseas or locally (Consultant/Locum Consultant)
  • Experience working as a Consultant Anaesthetist / Intensivist overseas or in the NHS
