Consultant Physician in Acute Medicine
Main Duties:
Special interest in Acute Medicine but can look at developing sub-specialty interest.
- To provide high quality and effective acute care to patients in the region.
- Working to increase the number of early discharges from the AMU as well as working in SDEC/ ACU to reduce the number of unnecessary admissions.
- Providing senior clinical opinions and being responsible for leadership, management and decision making in the AMU.
- Review and implement patient management plans.
- Supporting patient admission pathways in the hospital. Working closely with other sub-specialties within the hospital, including Acute Frailty and Emergency Medicine, as well as with GPs, ambulance staff, and community care services.
- Work closely with your team of Acute Consultant Physicians, junior doctors, nurses, advanced practitioners, and non-clinical managers.
- Participate in the AMU weekend Consultant oncall rota, which is 1:8 weekends, shifts from 08:00 to 14:00.
- Teaching junior doctors about Acute Medicine, both during bedside teaching on the ward and in allotted training sessions.
- This is a 10 PA post, 8.5 of these PAs will be clinical work, with the remaining 1.5 SPA dedicated to CPD, appraisals, research etc.
- Contribute to Divisional, Trust and Regional committees.

- You will be expected to supervise junior doctors on the wards. You will also be teaching junior doctors, both in bedside and classroom settings.
- To identify patients for early discharge and arrange any further required management.
- Take an active part in the daily handovers.
The Department & Hospital:
The Acute Medical team are a crucial part of the hospital structure as they exist as an initial part of a medical patient’s pathway through the hospital. The Acute team receive patients from the Emergency Department, GPs, and other community services. SDEC is co-run with the Acute and Emergency Medicine teams. This is part of the NHS plan to reduce admissions into hospital beds by enabling rapid assessment, diagnosis and treatment and, if safe to do so, sending the patient home the same day.
Covering the MDU, SDEC and AMU means you’re managing different types of cases on different shifts meaning no two days are the same. The Acute Medical Unit is based close to the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, and Radiology and you will work closely with these teams.

Specialty Doctor in Acute Medicine/SDEC
The chosen Appointee will work as a Specialty Doctor in Acute Medicine/SDEC (Same Day Emergency Care). The department provides care for a variety of different General Medicine and Acute Medicine patients, It would be best suited for Doctors who would like to be part of a rapidly growing team.
As a Specialty Doctor you will be making senior decisions within the department and team, you will have a consultant working above you if you come to struggle with difficult situations. You are expecting to support other Registrars and Juniors around you however, you will have some designated time within your own job plan to develop your clinical skills.
This post is perfect for doctors who would like to go through the CESR route to become a Consultant in the near future. There are no on calls required but that could change in the future depending on the needs of the department.
The Job
The successful Doctor will have a formal job plan which will be agreed with their Clinical Director before starting with the team. This position is based on 10 PA’s, the job plan agreed will be reviewed yearly to make sure it fits the Specialty Doctor guidelines. Other duties include:

Consultant Acute Medicine
The team are looking for a dedicated Acute Medicine Consultant to join their expanding team. This is an exciting time to be joining as the role of Acute Medicine continues to grow in patient pathways through the hospital. In conjunction with the NHS long term plan of expanding SDEC and focus on Frailty cases, you’ll be joining a multidisciplinary team providing diverse acute care.
Main Duties:
- The applicant will be responsible for the assessment, investigation and management of acutely unwell adult medical patients.
- You will be play a large role in providing clinical leadership and senior decision making within the Acute team.
- The Acute Medical Unit is managed by two Consultants between the hours of 09:00 – 17:00. When on duty here you will be managing referrals, completing ward rounds, and overseeing new admissions.
- The role will also include duties in the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) Unit which is co-managed with the Emergency Department. SDEC is open 10:00 – 22:00, with Consultant presence from 11:00 – 19:00. SDEC receives referrals from the Emergency Department, the Acute Medical Take, GPs, community referrals, and the ambulance service.
- You will also be working closely with colleagues in the Acute Frailty Unit, aiming to reduce unnecessary admissions of elderly patients to the hospital.
- There is also Acute Medical Consultant presence in the Emergency Department to help with diagnoses and referral to the AMU.
- Acute Medicine Physicians are also heavily involved in managing the Acute Medical Take.
- To be part of the Acute Consultant on call rota, which at present is 1:7 weekends.
- Working alongside the acute oncall team, which is largely medics from the general medical specialties.
- This is a 10 PA contract, which consists of 8.5 PAs of direct clinical work and 1.5 PAs per week Supporting Professional Activities.
- As a senior member of staff you will be involved in teaching junior medical staff, alongside nurses, AHPs, and other members of the Acute team. This may be classroom or bedside teaching.
- The team are focussed on maintaining high standards of care so you will be expected to partake in quality improvement / audit / clinical governance activities.
- There is also the option to undertake your own research, as well as supervising junior doctors’ research.

You will be joining a team of Acute Medicine Physicians who are committed to maintaining a standard of high-quality care. The Acute Medical Unit is situated close to the Emergency Department, SDEC, Acute Frailty Unit, and Radiology department. The Acute Medicine department is part of the Division of Medicine, which encompasses all general medical sub-specialties and the post-holder will be expected to work closely with these teams.
The hospital is a medium-sized hospital with a wide range of services. The Acute Medicine department is looking to expand its Consultant team as the AMU/SDEC become a more integral part of inpatient flow.

Registrar in Cardiology and General Medicine
Main Duties:
- This role is ideal for someone looking to develop their clinical experience and skills in Cardiology and General Medicine.
- You will be providing clinical support to the Cardiology and General Medicine Consultant teams, as well as working with a team of junior doctors.

- Oncalls are from the unselected acute take which means you will continue developing your Acute and General Medicine skills. It is a 1:10 oncall rota.
- To be an active part of the education programme within the Medicine department.
- You will be expected to keep up to date with your own training, courses and education related to your field.
