Consultant in Acute Medicine/SDEC

This is a new post that sits between Specialty Doctor grade and Consultant grade. It was created to give doctors an opportunity to focus on providing direct patient care at a Consultant level but less on the other clinical and non-clinical responsibilities required of a Consultant.

Main Duties:

• Act as one of the responsible Consultants for the management of patients admitted to the Acute Medicine Unit.
• Supervise and run the Ambulatory Care Unit.
• Support the medical on-call team.
• Provide senior clinical support to the multi-disciplinary team (MDT). Liaise closely with ED, medical and critical care, in-patient teams and primary and community services to ensure collaborative working arrangements are in place, which maximise benefits to patient care.
• Support and teach junior medical staff.
• Participate in clinical governance activities including clinical audits, incident reporting, risk management, complaint reviews, CPD. Each specialty has a Consultant Clinical Governance lead.
• Promote a friendly and team-based working environment.
• There are opportunities to undertake research. There are University and Trust research facilities available to use for interested doctors.

You’ll be based at one of the largest acute Trusts in the country which provides comprehensive medical services in a range of medical specialties.  The hospital was refurbished recently so comes with plenty of modern facilities and equipment.

There are excellent postgraduate facilities at this hospital, both of which include library services. Our Trust has a well-developed research and development unit and they encourage colleagues to take an active interest in medical research.

The location:

The West Midlands is one of the most sought-after locations in England. It includes Birmingham plus the surrounding cluster of smaller towns and cities around it including Coventry, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Dudley. Combined, they make up the largest urban area in the country outside of London. Its an area very well known for its multiculturalism, with a large population that comes from a variety of ethnic backgrounds.

Compared to other regions in the UK, the West Midlands offers some very affordable housing options so it tends to be a suitable option if you have a large family to support.

As a Neurology Consultant you will be joining a team of specialised Neurologists to deliver high quality care to patients with Neurological conditions.

The Job

The Trust are seeking a Consultant to:

• Be a senior decision maker on the Neurology wards, leading a team of Registrars and junior doctors.
• Participate in General Neurology outpatient clinics, and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) Neurology clinics.
• 1:11 weekend on-call rota, contribution to Acute/General Medicine unselected take.

The Hospital

The role is based in a large 800+ bed district general hospital. The Neurology team comprises Consultants, Registrars, SHOs, Neurophysiologists, and a team of Specialist nurses in Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis and Epilepsy. The Neurology team work closely alongside a team of General Physicians to manage and consult on Neurology cases, as well as liaising with the Stroke Medicine team.

The hospital has close links with the local tertiary centre and the post-holder will be expected to liaise closely with these teams for certain specialised cases.

The Trust is committed to continuing professional development. You’ll have the opportunity to participate in monthly Neuropathology meetings with colleagues, dedicated Neurology teaching days with the junior team, and regular invitations to present about Neurology.

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with excellent Internal Medicine experience to step into one of the largest sub-specialties of Medicine. As an ST3 in Elderly Care / Geriatrics you’ll be responsible for maintaining a high level of care to patients aged >65, >80, or displaying frailty.

Main Duties:

The department are looking for a Registrar to:

• Cover the Elderly Care ward, Frailty ward, and Elderly Care Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC).
• Be involved in specialist outpatient clinics, including Falls, Parkinson’s, Movement Disorders etc.
• Participate on the General Medicine Registrar on-call rota.
• Conduct teaching, training, and supervision of junior doctors.

The Hospital & Department:

The hospital has just over 600 beds is the main site within the Trust. Geriatrics is part of the Medicine Division so you’ll work closely with colleagues across a wide range of medical sub-specialties including Acute Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Stroke, Neurology, Endocrinology, Rheumatology, etc. There are also close links with GPs and community colleagues to ensure effective patient discharge and follow up.

The location:

Based in a small city in the west midlands, the hospital has excellent transport links to the rest of the England, and you are within an hour of an international airport for ease of visiting family and friends overseas.

You have access to a wide range of amenities such as shops, markets, cinemas, restaurants, parks, etc. There is a large number of schools in the area rated ‘Good’ and ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted.

Working as a Specialty Doctor in the NHS, you will be required to be the senior decision maker alongside the Consultants in the department. Having the opportunity to be a leader in the team, supporting and guiding Juniors where it is needed but also you will have your own protective development time too! This includes help with your CESR.

• 40 hours a week (10PA contract) in Acute/SDEC
• Communicate with other departments for clinical and managerial reasons
• Be actively involved in Audits, research, and clinical governance
