Geriatrics is one of the largest medical sub-specialties in the NHS and very accessible to international doctors as a large portion of Geriatrics Medicine is essentially Internal Medicine. This Registrar level Geriatrics role is an excellent opportunity for doctors with a good background of General Internal Medicine looking to step into a new role in the NHS.
The job is based at the main acute site in the Trust, which has just over 700 beds. The Geriatrics department falls within the Division of Medicine, which is the largest division within the hospital. The Division of Medicine includes Acute Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Cardiology, Respiratory, Gastroenterology, Renal, Diabetes and Endocrinology, Rheumatology, Neurology, Stroke Medicine, Dermatology and Haematology. Given the nature of Geriatrics, you will also be closely linked to community partners outside of the main acute site.
The Geriatrics department, and wider Medicine division, provide high quality, patient-centred care to elderly patients presenting with frailty associated conditions. The team ensure that patients are consulted and involved in the major decision making in their treatment. Work in the geriatrics team involves working in the orthogeriatric trauma ward, the general frailty ward, and the Frailty SDEC.
The department is currently working on developing a plan to incorporate virtual frailty wards into the Geriatrics patient pathways. This will enable doctors, nurses and Advanced Care Practitioners (ACPs) to treat elderly patients with an acute medical condition from their own home. The team will work to provide high level clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions virtually and alongside colleagues in the community. This programme will put more of a focus on working with the community to treat elderly and frail patients, reducing hospital admissions and freeing up beds, and allowing more elderly patients to remain in the comfort of their own home for treatment.
