This role will suit doctors who have a sub-specialty interest in Respiratory Medicine they’d like to pursue; doctors who are looking to gain their first year of NHS experience to get into the training system; or doctors who are simply looking for their next non-training role at Registrar level.
You will be based at a medium sized district acute general hospital which was recently redeveloped 10 years ago. The hospital has a reputation for being very supportive of doctors coming straight from overseas so tends to be a good starting point if its your first role in the NHS. The hospital has been accredited as one of the UK’s top research centers, you will be encouraged to participate in the research taking place that involves the Respiratory department.

This is an exciting opportunity for experienced Anaesthetists who are looking to join an enthusiastic, forward-thinking team with a special interest in Intensive Care Medicine (ICM). The successful candidates will work alongside the existing team to help grow, develop and innovate the service to meet modern standards of care.
The successful candidate will join a team of highly dedicated medical, nursing and other professionals committed to providing a high quality service to the patients.
The appointee will be expected to participate in the overall provision of Anaesthetic services within the department to deputise for absent colleagues, to work flexibly, to ensure service and patient care, to achieve value for money through making the most effective use of available resources. The actual pattern of work can be altered to meet service and training needs.

Salary - £88,364- £119,133
Contract – 12 months (with a view to extend)
The Critical Care Unit is situated on the First Floor; 9 bedded facility including 6 level III beds and 3 level II (surgical HDU) beds, though beds are used flexibly. It is a modern facility with state-of-the-art monitoring and capacity for cardiac output monitoring (LidCO and ODM), invasive monitoring and haemofilteration (using Prismaflux machines). The unit has recently purchased a high frequency oscillator for use in severe hypoxaemia.
The ICU unit comprises of a 9 bed Intensive Care Unit. With regards to the national challenge of the COVID 19 situation, there is business continuity to provide additional capacity should the need to arise in the future.
The theatre suite consists of nine theatres, a major treatment room within the single site and one maternity theatre, all of which are equipped to modern standards. There are dedicated paediatric and adult recovery areas and facilities to manage high care patients for resuscitation. There is a separate Obstetric Suite with operating Theatre.
Main Duties of the job
The unit is covered weekdays by a consultant with an interest in ITU (forms part of a 9-week rota) and two staff grade or trainee. One of these two staff grades or trainees is responsible to take outreach referrals under the supervision of Consultant. Trainees rotate on occasion through ITU, which is accredited for basic and intermediate ICM training. There is ICM consultant ward rounds twice daily as required by ICS standards and RCoA. There is a separate Critical Care and General Consultant on call rota.
The hospital benefits from a team of band 7 Outreach nurses who have a close working relationship with ITU and Theatres. The unit admits over 300 patients per year, two thirds of which receive ventilator and multi organ support. It participates in the ICNARC and other initiatives through the GM Critical Care Network.
Once a month clinical work is cancelled for the majority of one day to protect time for audits.
The Trust encourages all consultant staff to take advantage of the study leave program offered. You will be allocated a leave quota of 30 days every 3 years for the purpose of study and professional leave for your own development.
