Acute Medicine is an excellent sub-specialty to imbed yourself in as it gives you a wide range of skills in the NHS across the breadth of Medicine, where you see many different types of cases. It is particularly suited to doctors joining from overseas with experience in Internal Medicine, ED and Medical ICU.
The Acute Medical team are a crucial part of the hospital structure as they exist as an initial part of a medical patient’s pathway through the hospital. The Acute team receive patients from the Emergency Department, GPs, and other community services. SDEC is co-run with the Acute and Emergency Medicine teams. This is part of the NHS plan to reduce admissions into hospital beds by enabling rapid assessment, diagnosis and treatment and, if safe to do so, sending the patient home the same day.
Covering the MDU, SDEC and AMU means you’re managing different types of cases on different shifts meaning no two days are the same. The Acute Medical Unit is based close to the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, and Radiology and you will work closely with these teams.
The team, and wider hospital, have done a lot of international recruitment over the last 3 years so understand very well what support an international doctor requires to settle into the new job. The induction period is well implemented to ensure you get the support you need from your team.
The Trust are committed to continuous professional development and have a great track record of either helping people through the CESR pathway or to continue into a formal training role. The postholder will contribute to quality improvement projects within the department. You will get a Consultant supervisor throughout your contract to assist with your continuing professional development.

The Anaesthetics/Theatres department has a main theatre suite housing 6 theatres. These are used by a variety of specialties which include ENT, Gynaecology, General Surgery and Orthopaedics. Cover is provided 5 days per week.
The CEPOD, Trauma and Obstetrics teams are active 24/7. The department has 2 day-surgery theatres and 2 eye-theatres which run MSK, Urology, ENT, Gynae, General Surgery, Eyes and Max Fax. They also support Adult and Paediatrics’ lists. The Pre-Assessment team runs clinics 5 days a week.
The Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU) is a 9-bed area with a mixture of both intensive and high dependency level patients from medicine, surgery, and obstetrics. They admit approximately 480 patients a year and deal with many more at ward level via the local outreach service.
There are six intensive therapy Consultants, an anaesthetics core trainee undergoing their ITU rotation, ACCS Emergency Medicine trainees, a FICM trainee and an F1/F2 doctor. They attend all cardiac arrest / trauma calls, including emergencies in obstetrics and paediatrics. They do not have a paediatric intensive care, but in conjunction with the anaesthesia team they do provide the initial resuscitation and stabilization of the sick child before they are ultimately repatriated by a specialist team to a tertiary unit.
Working in the ITU you will see the sickest patients in the hospital, from emergency patients of all ages via the emergency department and wards, to major post-operative cases. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team where the day-to-day business will include the assessment and admission of patients requiring advanced airway (including tracheostomy) and vascular access skills, ward rounds, arranging and preparing patients for intra-hospital investigations and liaising with specialist teams. They will also ensure you are supported to develop your clinical skills and career aspirations throughout your time with them. This may include further exposure in organ donation, focused echocardiography, research, education and wellbeing.
Throughout your employment you will be encouraged to become involved with the local departmental teaching curriculum. This involves the development and implementation of simulator-based teaching for Anaesthetic and ICM trainees in the 3G simulation suite supported by teaching mannikins and a comprehensive library of resources. You will also be involved in running a regular journal club, exam practice and critical incident scenarios.
Most permanent members of staff have a range of expertise and many years of medical experience, along with commitments within the school of Anaesthesia, Royal College of Anaesthetists, Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine and Cardiff University.
