A Snapshot into.. Sheffield

Sheffield is a vibrant city bursting with character and creativity, located in the English County of South Yorkshire. The City of Sheffield is England’s third largest district authority with a numbered population of around 575,400.

Sheffield is an ethnically diverse city, with around 19% of its population from black or minority ethnic groups. The largest of those groups is the Pakistani community, but Sheffield also has large Caribbean, Indian, Bangladeshi, Somali, Yemeni and Chinese communities.

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK’s largest, busiest and most successful NHS foundation Trusts, providing a full range of hospital and community services for people in Sheffield, as well as specialist care for patients from further afield. They manage 5 of Yorkshire’s most well-known teaching hospitals, with around 17,000 employees.

  • Around a third of Sheffield city is actually inside the Peak District National Park - no other city in the UK has part of a National Park inside its boundaries
  • Sheffield is home to the oldest football club in the world that plays association football. Sheffield FC was founded in 1857 by members of a cricket club based in Sheffield.

Education in Sheffield

Sheffield is also home to The University of Sheffield, a world top 100 University, and top 5 in the UK for best overall student experience and top UK Students' Union for the tenth consecutive year. Things to do in Sheffield:

Meadowhall Shopping Centre

Meadowhall is one of the UK's leading shopping and leisure destinations. With over 270 retail outlets, 37 restaurants and cafes and an 11 screen cinema, Meadowhall welcomes over 30 million visitors per year. Meadowhall's convenient location, combined with free parking and excellent public transport facilities, make the Centre easy to get to from all corners of the country.

The Peak District

The Peak District is an upland area in England at the southern end of the Pennines. Runners and walkers love the city's moors, ancient woods and winding valleys. Rock connoisseurs the world over know it as the country's climbing capital, while Sheffield's seven hills entice road cyclists and mountain bikers alike.

Theatres and Galleries

Sheffield Theatres is the largest theatre complex outside London, comprising the Crucible Theatre, Lyceum Theatre and Crucible Studio. Across three auditoria they offer a huge variety of home-grown and touring productions, with everything from West End musicals to cutting edge drama.

Ponds Forge International Sports Centre

Ponds Forge International Sports Centre is a leisure complex in Sheffield that contains an Olympic-sized swimming pool with seating for 2,600 spectators, family and children's pools, water slides and other sports facilities. Enjoy excellent food and drink, private parties, and social events here, a perfect location to socialize, relax, workout, swim and have fun.  

Museums and Heritage

Sheffield has a rich industrial heritage, having a major part in the Industrial Revolution in the 1900’s. Key attractions in Sheffield include Kelham Island Museum and Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet,  in which showcase inventions, heavy industry and intricate craftmanship. Additionally, a visit to the Metalwork Collection is the perfect place to see a selection of over 13,00 tools of trade.
