Relocating to the UK will always be an exciting but anxious time for international Doctors. In the current climate changes to travel can make the move confusing. Here at BDI we want to support you through the entire process from your home country to your new NHS Trust! In this blog we will explain the updated regulations surrounding quarantining when coming to the UK from abroad.
Any British or Irish national or third party national with residency in the UK will need to undergo the full 10 day quarantine in a government approved hotel if they are traveling to the UK from a variety of countries; an exhausted list can be found here.
However, non-nationals and non-residents who have been in any travel ban countries in the past 10 days currently cannot enter England. Although they can travel from a travel ban country to a non-travel ban country, stay there for ten days and then enter England with a 10-day quarantine outside of a hotel.
Nevertheless, for international Doctors who have an approved VISA and are collecting their BRP card on arrival to the UK you will be granted residence rights. This means you can travel to the UK as any British national would and will be expected the quarantine for ten days on arrival.
If you are traveling from a red list country and list of these can be found here, then you will need to do the following even if you are fully vaccinated:
If you are traveling from an amber list country, a list of these can be found here, then you will need to do the following even if you are fully vaccinated:
Fully UK vaccinated people coming from an amber list country do not need to quarantine or take a day 8 test after you arrive in England. This also applies if you were vaccinated under the UK vaccine programme overseas or a part of a UK-approved vaccine trial. You must have had your final dose of the vaccine at least 14 whole days before the date you arrive in England. You still need to book and take a day 2 test.
Before you travel to England you must:
On arrival in England:
To book a quarantine visit the government’s booking portal here.
The next step is to choose your arrival port. You can only enter England through one of five ports: London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London City, Farnborough, or Birmingham if you're coming from a nation with a travel ban.
You’ll then be presented with the total cost for your stay, this will include transport from the airport on arrival to your quarantine. Please note, you may need to extend your stay if you test positive for COVID-19 whilst quarantining. In this instance you would need to quarantine for an extra ten days from the date the test was administered.
It is also important to note that you are only able to book through the government’s portal, you can NOT book your own hotel accommodation for quarantining. If you fail to do so and arrive without approved quarantine accommodation you may be fined £4,000.
