A Snapshot into... Stoke-on-Trent

Stoke-on-Trent is a city in the English Midlands. Often abbreviated to Stoke, it is located in Staffordshire, England, with an area of 36 square miles. The area is well-known for its pottery, locally manufactured ceramics, ornamental arts, and a WWII Spitfire are on exhibit at the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery. Trentham Estate is a visitor attraction located on the southern fringe of the city of Stoke-on-Trent and features manicured gardens and even a monkey forest!

University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust provides a full range of general acute hospital services for approximately 700,000 people living in and around Staffordshire and beyond. The Trust also provides specialised services, such as Trauma, for three million people in a wider area, including neighbouring counties and North Wales. The Hospitals under the trust include:

  • Bradwell Hospital
  • Cheadle Hospital
  • The County Hospital

The main Hospital, providing acute care, is The Royal Stoke University Hospital. The Hospital is a teaching hospital in partnership with Keele University and have a patient-centred clinical research facility. The new £370m hospital became fully operational in 2015.

Facts about Stoke-on-Trent

  • ‘Mintons’ was a major pottery company in Staffordshire, they were Europe's leading ceramic factory during the Victorian era. The tiles on the floor of the Houses of Parliament were made in Stoke-on-Trent, by Minton.
  • Edward Smith, the captain of the Titanic, was born in Stoke.
  • People from Stoke often call each other ‘duck’ apparently it has nothing to do with aquatic birds. It's said to come from the Saxon word 'ducas' from which the title of duke was derived.
  • Edward Stephen Hall, from Stoke, is a British former professional strongman. He won the World's Strongest Man 2017 competition. Hall has also won the UK's Strongest Man and England's Strongest Man competitions multiple times.

Education in Stoke-on-Trent

Staffordshire University is the main university in Stoke, they offer world class healthcare education at their specialist ‘Centre of Excellence’ in Stafford and have a global network of more than 20,000 people who study their degrees internationally. It has been stated that 78 per cent of their research is world leading or of international importance (Research Excellence Framework 2014). 

Things to do in Stoke-on-Trent:

Trentham Monkey Forest

As mentioned in the introduction, Stoke is home to the Trentham Monkey Forest! This unusual attraction is home to 140 free ranging Barbary Macaques and is set on 60 acres of old Staffordshire forest.

XPVR Virtual Reality XPerience

This virtual experience centre offers a very unique outing! From riding dragons in a magical world to diving deep into the ocean they have over 40 virtual reality games to choose from.

Ninja Warrior UK Adventure

Stoke is home to the UK's first official Ninja Warrior UK Adventure Park. In 1-hour sessions, aspiring ninjas of all ages and skills will get the opportunity to explore the park.

Emma Bridgewater Factory

Whip yourself up a brand-new mug at the Emma Bridgewater Factory located in Hanley where children can create for free!

Teamsport Indoor Karting

Teamsport Indoor Karting has a 500m indoor go kart racecourse! This family friendly attraction caters for all ages. It was founded in 1992, opening its first track in Guildford, and is now the UK's largest indoor go karting company.

Mow Cop Castle

Mow Cop Castle is a folly located near Mow Cop, Cheshire, England, in the civil parish of Odd Rode -just outside of Stoke. It is recognised as a Grade II listed building on the National Heritage List for England.
