A Snapshot Into... Swindon

Swindon is a town in the southwest of England. It is a large town in Wiltshire lying between Bristol, 35 miles (56 kilometres) to the west, and Reading, the same distance to the east. The town is 71 miles (114 km) west of London. The population of the Swindon built-up area is approximately 185,600. The area is known for its diversity and thriving atmosphere; simultaneously the town is also surrounded by superb countryside.

The Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust receives about 1.2 million patient interactions every year. They provide healthcare to the residents of Swindon and the surrounding regions, providing the most up-to-date treatments and care in hospitals, the community, and people's homes. They offer a variety of specialised treatments from the Great Western Hospital in Swindon, which is located immediately off M4 Junction 15. The hospital contains around 480 beds, many outpatient clinics, CT and MRI scanners, maternity services, an Intensive Care Unit, an Urgent Care Centre, and a 24-hour Emergency Department.

Facts about Swindon

  • Some parts of the James Bond films were filmed in Swindon! Both the Motorola Building and the Spectrum Building witnessed Pierce Brosnan in action!
  • Swindon is home to one of the most famous military aircraft in the world. After a bombing in Southampton destroyed the original facilities, production of the famous Spitfire was relocated to South Marston, not far from RAF Fairford, where the Royal International Air Tattoo is held every July. Even though only 121 aircraft were manufactured in Swindon, the South Marston facility was producing 70+ aircraft each month!
  • Swindon is home to a small but very well-presented Museum of Computing.
  • Swindon is blessed with a great deal of wonderful public art especially the West Swindon Sculpture trail, and The Blondinis.
  • Ken White, a Swindon-based muralist and painter of industrial landscapes, designed Virgin Airways' renowned red-lady symbol.

Education in Swindon  

According to the government website, Swindon has 81 primary schools and 20 Secondary schools. To find out more information about term dates, applications, standards, curriculum and general education, visit the Gov.uk.

Oxford Brookes University has a Swindon Campus, it has undergone a new development and refurbishment, and is home to state-of-the-art academic facilities including a subject library, clinical skills lab and up-to-date simulation training equipment. Swindon Campus is based in the Joel Joffe Building on the Delta Business Park, two miles west of Swindon town centre, close to the West Swindon amenities and retail parks. The Campus offers an Adult Nursing course. In line with the new Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Future Nurse Standards (2018), their Adult Nursing curriculum has recently been re-developed. At their recent approval event (March 2020) they were commended by the NMC for their excellent partnership working with placement organisations and for the inclusion of a strong public health theme throughout the curriculum.

Lydiard park

Lydiard Park is a 260-acre country park at Lydiard Tregoze, which was its formal name, about 3 miles west of central Swindon, Wiltshire, England, near Junction 16 of the M4 motorway. The children's play area, Cafe & Tea Rooms, events and education programmes make Lydiard Park a great destination for a family day out.

Swindon Designer Outlet

Swindon Designer Outlet occupies the restored Great Western railway works and is owned by McArthurGlen.  It opened in March 1997 and is located a few miles from junction 16 of the M4 motorway. There's something for everyone; within their beautiful heritage building you'll find cafes, restaurants, a children's play area and more than 110 boutiques.

Coate Water Country Park

Coate Water is a country park situated 5 km to the southeast of central Swindon, England. It has a 56-acre reservoir built in the 1820s as a headwater tank for the Wiltshire and Berkshire Canal.

Wyvern Theatre

Wyvern Theatre in Swindon is a 635 seat venue hosting musicals, comedy, plays and gigs.
