A Snapshot into... Scarborough!

Scarborough is an attractive town on the stunning Yorkshire Coast and is blessed with two sandy bays. It offers sandy beaches, breath-taking coastline and wonderful family attractions to many tourists throughout the year and of course the lucky locals!

York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides a comprehensive range of acute hospital and specialist healthcare services for approximately 800,000 people living in and around York, North Yorkshire, North East Yorkshire and Ryedale - an area covering 3,400 square miles.

Scarborough Hospital is the Trust’s second largest hospital. It has an Accident and Emergency department and provides acute medical and surgical services, including trauma and intensive care services to the population and visitors to the North East Yorkshire Coast.

Facts about Scarborough

  • Scarborough school students helped to create the worlds largest comic strip in 1988, a record that is still standing today! The children in the local school transformed a section of South Bay beach into a giant front page of the classic British comic ‘The Beano’.
  • The oldest discovered house in Britain is located near Scarborough, dated 8500BC.
  • In the early 1700s mineral waters were discovered in the cliffs of Scarborough’s shore. These waters were renowned for their medicinal properties – this revelation led to the creation of the Scarborough Spa.

Education in Scarborough

The University of Hull is a public research university in Kingston upon Hull approximately an hour from Scarborough. It was founded in 1927 as University College Hull. The University of Hull has risen 19 places in the 2022 Guardian University Rankings and ranked in top 5 of universities in the 'Northern' university ranking. 

Things to do in Scarborough:

Peasholm Park

Peasholm Park is wrapped up in a tranquil lake and in the summer months you can hire rowing boats, canoes and pedaloes to enjoys the water at close quarters.

Scarborough beach

Scarborough is one of the UK’s top seaside resorts and it’s easy to see why. It offers two large, sandy bays, divided by a rocky headland on which the majestic ruins of 11th century Scarborough Castle. Children will love what’s on offer here, whether it’s building sandcastles, playing in the amusement arcades or splashing about in the waves.

Scarborough Open Air Theatre

Scarborough’s 8,000 capacity Open Air Theatre was built by Scarborough Corporation in the 1930’s and hosts fantastic music events all year round.

Alpamare waterpark

The waterpark has water slides and a wave pool plus a spa with a sauna and steam room!

Scarborough Spa

Scarborough spa is a central attraction within a grand Victorian building. As well as the infamous spa they also stage family entertainment, comedy nights, conferences and wedding fairs.
