Whilst strictly speaking Bournemouth is not classified as a City, it does have a large population of 187,503, making it the largest town in the county of Dorset. According to the listings on the Bournemouth Council website, Bournemouth has 29 Primary Schools and a further 13 Secondary Schools. Those living within Bournemouth may also have access to certain schools in Christchurch. The town is also home to Bournemouth University which has more than 19,000 students and is ranked as one of the top 200 young universities in the world. The institution offers more than 150 undergraduate degrees and over 100 master’s and doctoral degrees. It is particularly renowned for its media courses and BU is recognised as the only Centre for Excellence in Media Practice in the UK.
Oceanarium
The Oceanarium is located next to Bournemouth Pier, on the beach front, just a 5 minute walk from the town centre. Complete with penguin enclosure, you can find out about all aspects of marine life in this popular, family friendly aquarium.
The Beaches
Bournemouth’s seven long miles of golden sands are great for days out, family fun and adventuring. Maintained to the highest international standards for beach cleanliness and environmental management, Bournemouth's beaches are arguably some of the best in the world. Bournemouth’s Central Beaches are situated on the Pier which offers fantastic views of the bay, children’s rides and boat trips to a number of other destinations along the coast.
Town Centre Shopping
Bournemouth town centre has a mix of department stores, well known fashion brands, high street shops and independent boutiques. Surrounded by restaurants, bars and coffee shops, there are plenty of opportunities to relax and shop. Westover Road runs alongside Bournemouth’s gardens and you can shop for designer labels, art and jewellery along its canopied walkway. The Triangle is well known for its eclectic, bohemian vibe and independent stores. Lansdowne is Bournemouth’s business district and there are florists and specialist stockists dotted among the bars and restaurants.
Leisure Centres
Bournemouth prides itself on an active population and visitors often head here in search of adventure. Close to the centre of the town, you’ll even find water slides and high wire experiences. The main sports centres in Bournemouth are run by the council and include the Littledown Centre, Pelhams Park, Stokewood, Sir David English and Queen's Park all offering their own array of sports, activities and leisure spaces.
