Chesterfield is the largest town in Derbyshire County, set on the edge of the glorious Peak District! Chesterfield has a huge amount to offer both its visitors and residence, with it’s beautiful outdoors, local independent retailers, high street names, historical architecture and contemporary experiences! A popular location, Chesterfield is home to 104,000 people.

Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust serves a North Derbyshire Population of more than 400,000 people, with over 4,000 staff and 170 Volunteers. They provide a full range of Acute services – plus community, midwifery, specialist children’s services, GP and Primary Care services, alongside a 24 Hour A&E. The Hospital boasts an overall ‘Good’ CQC rating.
 

Facts about Chesterfield

  • Silver screen legend Sir John Hurt CBE was born in Chesterfield, his father was also the vicar of St Stephen's Church in Woodville, Derbyshire.
  • Over 23 million people live within a two-hour drive from Chesterfield.
  • The black and white chequered band around police helmets and caps is accredited to Sir Percy Sillitoe, Chief Constable of Chesterfield from 1923 to 1925.
  • The Chesterfield canal is 45.5 miles long and has 65 locks.
  • Lady Olave Baden-Powell, founder of the Girl Guide movement, was born in Chesterfield in 1889 (She has a road named after her!)

Education in Chesterfield

According to the government schools website, Chesterfield has access to 41 primary schools, 11 secondary schools, and 6 sixth forms/colleges.

The University of Derby also has one of their sites in Chesterfield, which is specifically for nurses in training. The University site has been labelled a ‘Centre of Excellence for Health and Social Care’ and their nursing courses are ranked 14th in the Guardian University Guide 2020. They have a very strong relationship with the Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS foundation Trust.
 

Things to do in Chesterfield

Chesterfield Canal

The Chesterfield Canal offers a peaceful retreat with beautiful countryside and plenty of wildlife to enjoy. Five miles of the canal have been restored between Chesterfield and Staveley. You can enjoy regular trips on the Madeline from Hollingwood Hub or the John Varley II from Tapton Lock in Chesterfield.

The Canal hosts a variety of events throughout the year including concerts and a festival each June. The area is also very popular with walkers and cyclists. Find out walking information here and cycling information here.

Chesterfield Town Centre

The compact, friendly environment of Chesterfield town centre is home to high street names, a wealth of independents and of course the town’s famous outdoor market.  Explore narrow medieval streets such as The Shambles for unique independent shops or visit Vicar Lane and The Pavements Shopping Centre for popular high street names.  And don’t forget Chesterfield market, one of the biggest open-air markets in the country.

Matlock Farm Park

Matlock Farm Park is open all year round and hopes to give families a wonderful visit in the fresh air and tranquility of the countryside. The park has a large selection of animals including llamas, goats, meerkats, turkeys, peacocks, deer, cattle, wallabies, ducks, alpacas and sheep to name but a few. Horse riding lessons and pony trekking is also available. Indoor and Outdoor Play areas are available, with a go-kart track and play areas. A licensed café is on site serving delicious homemade food.
 

Queens Park Sports Centre

Queen’s Park Sport Centre provides you with an incredible health and fitness offering with affordable memberships to suit everyone, including student and family memberships. The centre has a 90 station gym, an eight-lane swimming pool, a learner pool with children's fun water features, an eight court sports hall, two glass-back squash courts and group exercise class studios.
