A Snapshot into.. Cornwall

Cornwall is a county on England’s South Western Coast, encompassing wild moorland, hundreds of sandy beaches, coastal walks, traditional pubs and pretty harbor villages such as Fowey and Falmouth. The total population of Cornwall is an estimated 566,000 and the county itself only has one city, Truro!

Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust provides acute care and specialist health services across three main hospitals. The Trust is the main provider of acute and specialist care services in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. It serves a population of around 430,000 people, a figure that can increase significantly with visitors during the busiest times of the year. The Trust employs approximately 5,000 staff and has a budget of approximately £380 million.

Education in Cornwall

Cornwall itself is home to over 250 Primary Schools and a further 50 Secondary Schools, including Sixth Forms and Academies. Not only does Cornwall have a huge variety of Schools, there are in fact 38 schools in Cornwall currently rated as 'outstanding' by Ofsted school inspectors.

Cornwall is also home to Truro College, Falmouth University and The University of Exeter’s campus’s in Truro and Penryn. In the 2015/16 academic year, the University of Exeter supported £73.4 million in economic output and 853 jobs across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. In addition to this, Falmouth University (sharing Penryn campus with Exeter) covers the breadth of the creative industries, from art, design and fashion, to gaming, music and film. International students make up a large proportion of the student population in Falmouth from the Universities.

Things to do in Cornwall

The Eden Project

With a worldwide reputation, and recognised by the British Travel Awards as the Best UK Leisure Attraction 5 years running, The Eden Project is a popular visitor attraction in Cornwall. Inside the two biomes are huge tropical gardens with plants that are collected from many diverse climates and environments. There are themed events according to the seasons, workshops for adults and children, activity days, music concerts and much more besides.

Water Gate Bay

Set on a spectacular, two mile surfing beach on the North Cornwall coast, Watergate Bay is the perfect destination for a contemporary beach holiday or day visit! Famous for the location of the Extreme Academy, if you want to learn how to surf, kite surf, paddle board, waveski or handplane then here’s the place for tuition and equipment hire!

Blue Reef Aquarium

The Blue Reef Aquarium, situated on Towan beach in Newquay, overlooking the Atlantic sea, recreates the world under the Sea. Visitors can enjoy the amazing aquatic life including seahorses, giant Jellyfish and Piranha.

Polzeath

A small village situated on the north coast with a fantastic beach, Polzeath is a renowned surfing and foodie destination. The award-winning beach is one of only eight beaches in Cornwall that have received the Blue Flag Award 2017 and attracts a multitude of surfers due to it’s easily accessible location and long slow breaking waves.

Padstow

Padstow is a town, civil parish and fishing port on the north coast of Cornwall. Padstow offers visitors a host of things to do from Beach Days and Shopping to Boat Trips and Lobster Hatchery’s!

Sharps Brewery

Several types of beer are brewed in Cornwall, including stouts and ales. Sharp's Brewery is a British brewery founded in 1994 in St Minver Lowlands, Rock, Cornwall, by Bill Sharp. The Brewery create exceptional quality beer including the UK's #1 cask beer, Doom Bar. Visit the Brewery for beer tasting and tours!
